Miners' huts at Waiuta, West Coast

Description: Scene at Waiuta, Inangahua County, which was centred on the Blackwater gold mine. Shows two rows of miners' huts, probably prefabricated. Each of them has a front door, one window, a small verandah in front, and a chimney. Photograph taken by William Archer Price circa 1910. Formerly identified as Blackwater. Confusion arosed because Waiuta was centred upon the Blackwater gold mine, and was sometimes referred to as Upper Blackwater. The 'Red Huts' were built circa 1908 by Blackwater Mines Ltd for single workers, and were sold as farm huts etc when the mine, and town, closed in 1951. Description: Scene at Waiuta, Inangahua County, which was centred on the Blackwater gold mine. Looks up at a row of miners' huts, probably prefabricated. Each of them has a front door, one window, a small verandah in front, and a chimney, with a water tank on the side away from the fireplace. Photograph taken by William Archer Price circa 1910. Source of descriptive information - Huts originally identified as being at Blackwater. Waiuta was centred upon the Blackwater Mine and was sometimes referred to as Upper Blackwater. Library Client has identified them as being four miles away at Waiuta (April 2000). See also `Waiuta' by Gerald Morris page 13.
