Description: A centrally-placed mature multi-trunked cabbage tree, with rocky headlands and a canoe on the sea beyond. Likely to be the eastern side of Miramar Peninsula, or the entrance to Wellington Harbour seen from Houghton or Island Bay. Description: View looking south towards Kapiti Island from near the mouth of the Ohau and Waikawa Rivers, with two Maori and a Pakeha cooking over a fire, logs on the beach and three Maori with a dog in the distance. A small outline in the sea in the distance between Kapiti and the distant headland may be Mana Island First published in: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847) Plate 1 No 3 text p 6-7 Location of original watercolour: State Library of Victoria, reference number H83.50/9. The watercolour includes an inscription, bottom centre, with the word 'Mana' (i.e. Mana Island) visible. Two shallow rowboats are drawn up on the beach to the right, with several groups of about a dozen European men in the foreground and part-way down the beach. Logs washed up on the beach are as shown in the engraving. Description: A detailed view of the houses and streets in the town from a high viewpoint, (the hill behind St Mary's Church) looking out to the west towards the sea. St Mary's Church and the churchyard are in the left foreground. The names of several house-owners are given, along with details of other features, including the houses of [William] Lakeman, Dorset, [Richard] Brown, "G. Inn" [Government Inn?] New Zealand Company houses [i.e. the immigration barracks], the gaol, Kawau Pa on the right, near the sea, a store (or stone?) house, the mill [Huatoki] stream, grass, streets, the bridge and gardens. The position of the South Huatoki Reef is also given, just out to sea, in line with the corner of the pa on the right. Brougham Street runs down the centre of the view, diagonally from the right bottom corner, with Vivian Street branching off to the right. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Two images on one page. The upper image shows a group of Maori children on a swing or moari, a tall pole with ropes attached from its top, flying out over a bank, watched by a group of seated adults and children. The palisades of a pa are in the right background and a low hill in the distance. The lower view shows a haka, with naked men in the act of raising oars, watched by other Maori. Canoes are drawn up at the edge of Lake Rotorua and the palisades of Ohinemutu Pa and its higher buildings can be seen behind the men. Both drawings are copied from the work of Joseph Jenner Merrett, without acknowledgement. See the Library's Hobson Album for Merrett's drawing 'A native game' showing the swing. (E-216-017). This was drawn before 1843. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. Similarly, in the Hobson Album, also by Merrett is 'The pah of Oinamutu on the Rotorua Lake', which provides the background Angas has used for War Dance. Description: View from the hills opposite Wanganui township, looking down on the river and town, with the Gun-boat Stockade (the site of Moutoa Gardens) closest, the Main Stockade (Rutland Stockade) and the middle stockade (York Stockade). Houses and possibly a hospital are also visible as is Christ Church and St John's Wood (to the far right), with the sea horizon on the left.
