Description: Steep hills divided by a steeply-falling river. Red-coated soldiers of the 50th Regiment shown with the track and bridge over which they moved their cannons. Several Maori standing close to the bridge and a waterfall. Further Maori indicated on top of the hill to the right. Lieutenant Thomas, in charge of the transport, shown on the peak of a hill to the left. 'Cannonade' appears to be an error for carronade, a short heavy cannon with wide bore. Note on back in the hand of the copyist: "Having failed in obtaining Mrs Guard and her two children from the natives although H M ship bombarded the forts and destroyed their canoes (ammunition being demanded in exchange by them which Her Majesty would not have been pleased to part in Traffic as they wished it). Two cannonades were landed 2 miles to the Eastward under protection of the ship and military dragged across this creek and put in position on a bank commanding the ports from which the natives were driven and possession taken" Other Titles - Carronades Inscriptions: Recto - top left: Sailors transporting the cannonade with their guards.
