Description: Split image of two buildings in New Plymouth, taken by Robert Percy Moore 1) Angled view of a single-storeyed wooden building, the Brae Muir private maternity hospital run by Nurse A Locke. Entrance porch near the road on the right. There are four women on a roofed balcony on the left. Nurse Locke standing, with three women wearing dressing gowns sitting next to two babies' cots. Stone wall by the road, rustic arbour over the gate. 2) The Y.W.C.A. Clarke memorial Hostel. Description: Shows the wooden single-storeyed building with high gables, at the top of a rise, with a crowd assembled for the opening. This hospital is sometimes named the Westown Public Hospital. (see 1/2-047946) Attributed by vendor to William Mathew Hodgkins. However Hodgkins is not known to have visited New Plymouth and this style of realistic drawing of notable buildings of New Plymouth was produced by Taranaki artist Francis Hamar Arden Inscriptions: Backing board recto - top right - (On label): [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Photographs taken in New Zealand, except several of yachts in the Solent, England which were taken by West & Son (Gosport, England). Most of the New Zealand scenes were photographed by Arthur Thomas Bothamley. A number of images show Pukearuhe and the Pukearuhe Redoubt, and include two views of a large wooden and thatched roofed house near the Redoubt. It was single-storeyed, with a bay window, and was probably the house occupied by Marion Ellis Rowan and her husband (1873-1877) while the 43rd Regiment was stationed at Pukearuhe, near the Redoubt. Several views of the Marlborough Sounds show a group, including Gerald Fitzgerald (son of James Edward Fitzgerald), alongside several Rob Roy canoes, and one with a canoe named `Geroit Mare'. Description: Publicity photographs taken by various unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways Department. The first sequence shows Napier before the 1931 earthquake, and after. Photographs include various buildings seriously damaged, including the hospital, the Masonic Hotel, Public Trust offices in Napier and in Hastings, the Hastings Post Office, and a view of the Napier Park Refugee Camp. Further sequences show areas of interest in New Zealand, including an early photograph of the Pink and White Terraces taken by Charles S Spencer (before the Tarawera eruption in 1886); the Government Sanatorium in Rotorua showing various therapeutic facilities and treatments including diathermy treatment, the private slipper bath, the auxiliary massage douche and the cooling room; a group of men working on carvings at the Rotorua School of Maori Arts and Crafts; members of the Rotorua Hunt Club riding out; Chateau Tongariro interior and exterior views; the Blue Baths in Rotorua; Akitio Homestead and Maunsell's Homestead (Tinui); the Hermitage and Tasman Chalet at Mount Cook (Aoraki); and the Government Accomodation House at Waitomo.
