Description: Views of the 1927 Royal Tour of New Zealand by the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Includes displays viewed and events attended by the royal couple, as well as travelling between towns by car and train. Places visited include: the Royal New Zealand Air Force at Wigram airport, Canterbury University, the view over Lyall Bay from Truby King's house, Dunedin war memorial and the war memorial at Waitaki Boys' High School, Government House in Wellington. Description: Photographic postcards of Wellington and Rotorua taken circa 1940s. Three taken by Royal Studios and two by Heaton Clairemont Peart. Photographers of other images unidentified. Wellington City views are taken from Mount Victoria and Tinakori Hill. Prominent landmarks seen in these photographs include the National War Memorial and Carillon, Wellington High School, Basin Reserve cricket ground, Wellington East Girls' College, Wellington College, Winter Show Buildings, Weir House, Wellington Whares, St Gerard's Church, Basin Reserve, Wellington Railway Station, and the road to the Hutt Valley. In Rotorua sites photographed include Whakarewarewa with pa (whare and carvings) and hot pools (including Maori women washing clothes), Government Gardens Bath House and entranceway, Ward Bath house, top of Eagle's Nest geyser at Wairakei, and the shore at Lake Rotorua. Description: Adkin album. Wellington (2), nos. 241-441. Views of Wellington taken between 1950 and 1957. Includes harbour swim event at Evans Bay, 26 February 1950; speedboat contests at Evans Bay, 4 March 1950; Patent slip and the Union Steam Ship Co's wharf at Evans Bay; tulip Sunday at the Wellington Botanic Garden (15 October 1950); Evans Bay Yacht Club yard in use as a temporary base for Solent flying boats with the Ararangi at a mooring; various views of reclamation undertaken by TEAL for their flying boat service at Evans Bay, and flying boats. Many of the images in this album are linked with Evans Bay, as Adkin was living at 424 Evans Bay Parade in the 1950s, several images showing the house. Views of Wellington from the Mount Victoria lookout and from the Tinakori Ridge Radio Station, in 1952; the old Robert Hannah residence in Boulcott Street; views of the inner city including the upper end of Ghuznee St., Upper Willis St., the Children's Dental Clinic. Image no. 313 shows a house at 214 Upper Willis Street (known as Restwyn), taken in Feb 1953, while image no. 434 shows the same site in January 1957 after the house had been demolished. Numbers of images show preparations and decorations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. There are many photographs of preparation for extending the airport at Rongotai, showing Moa Point Hill in course of destruction to provide spoil for reclamation, and also Rongotai Ridge, with one view of a house being moved from the ridge, also showing development of the breakwater at Moa Point, all taken betwen 1953 and 1957. A 1954 image shows an extension to the Town Hall under construction for municipal offices in December 1953; the Hinemoa at No. 1 Ferry Wharf; preparations and decorations for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in December 1953, including decorations at the Railway Station, Defence Stores Building in Featherston St., Kirkcaldie & Stains, James Smiths Corner, DIC, and the GPO. Image taken in March 1956 shows a house with turret on the corner of Upper Willis St and Aro St (a house which was shown in CD Barraud's painting of 1877). Views of yachting in the harbour, Ward Island, and the Eastbourne seawall. Outcast yacht is pictured.

Areas further out include the National War Memorial and Carillon, the Basin Reserve, Wellington College and its grounds, and Lyall Bay. An aerial map of Rongotai through to Lyall Bay shows superimposed plans for the Rongotai airport (page 18). Description: Mainly publicity photographs for New Zealand Railways, most taken by unidentified photographers, though there are several portraits taken by S P Andrew (Stanley Polkingorne Andrew); also a number of images near the beginning of the album have a pencilled note which says "Mr Hinge's negative". There are a number of photographs of advertisements and posters for New Zealand Railways, including one promoting safety at railway crossings. In this scene a young woman is holding up a banner "STOP! Safety first", wearing a hat labelled "Stop", a sash labelled "Safety first" and wearing a skirt with the image of a car crash at a railway crossing. At the end of the album there are several photographs of postage stamps. Several photographs were taken at the opening of the Auckland Railway Station. Then a number show luggage or goods being loaded onto the interislander ferry; and near the back of the album a series showing racehorses, with one view of a horse being lifted onto a ship in a crate. A large section shows the Wellington rally for Lord and Lady Baden-Powell at the Basin Reserve in 1931, and later in the album views of them laying a wreath at the Citizen's War memorial (Cenotaph). Pages 38-43 contain 20 black and white photographs of water colour paintings by Thomas Ryan, from the 1890s. The subjects are mostly lakes and mountains in the South Island, including Lakes Mahinapua, Wakatipu, Te Anau, Wanaka and Manapouri; Teremakau River, Bealey River, Teremakau River and Clinton Valley; and in the North Island Lakes Rotorua and Tikitapu, and two of the Uruwera. On page 64 there is a photograph of a barred window. In front there is an ice-axe, a pair of skis, a fishing rod, 2 rifles, and a lidded straw picnic basket. It seems to have been used as the basis for a New Zealand Railways poster advertising outdoor life in New Zealand (see p 65). There are a number of pages of portraits of children, several of which have been formed into montages of images. None of these are identified. Some portraits of dignitaries involved with New Zealand Railways are identified with surname, but many are not identified at all. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
