Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. One photograph shows Lord Ranfurly in Auckland, reading the proclamation extending the boundaries of the colony to include the Cook Islands (p 16). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Photographs taken in Far North District, circa 1939, possibly by Ethel Pearson who was a school teacher at Herekino School at this time. Four images show: four unidentified Maori children on Ninety Mile Beach, Tangi Heke (descendant of Hone Heke) wearing a pinafore; a man called Joe, who is riding a horse, and his bullock team; and hot pools and Maori whare at Ngawha Springs. Photos are all annotated on the rear by Pearson. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Ethel Pearson worked at Herekino School on her first teaching assignment. Description: Contains official copies of correspondence relating to land claims from Te Tai Tokerau and Pewhairangi (i.e. Bay of Islands, the word is a transliteration), Waikato and Whanganui. Includes various documents relating to Whanganui giving extensive lists of names for the purchase of guns, powder and flint by Whanganui Maori; lists of Whanganui Maori working for the Regional Magistrate and their salaries; census of friendly natives, Whanganui district. The last document is the original of the deed by which Nopera Parakareao and other Te Rarawa chiefs sold the Muriwhenua lands of Te Aupouri to the Rev Richard Taylor, witnessed by William Gilbert Puckey, 20 January 1840. A translation of this in Taylor's hand is in MS-Papers-0075-106E. Written only two weeks before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi to secure private property rights for Taylor (before the arrival of Hobson and the signing of the Treaty) but the publication of Gipps's proclamations of 14 January 1840 invalidated the sale.
