Artist unknown :Wanganui

Date: 10 Jan 1848

By: Smith, William Mein, 1799-1869

Reference: A-466-001

Description: Shows a fine detailed view of the town of Wanganui, from across the river. Shows settlers' houses, the Christ Church, and the Rutland and York (incorrectly noted as 'Fort') stockades on the hill mounds above the town. The Gun-boat stockade, on the site of Mouta Gardens, seems to have been demolished, although the fencing is still in place. A two-masted sailing ship is visible on the river, with a dinghy tied to it, along with a fully-manned waka and a smaller canoe. Two figures sit on the bank in the foreground, their backs to the viewer. A tall flagstaff stands on the hill behind the York stockade Attributed by the auction house to Captain William Mein Smith, but this is probably incorrect. By comparison, it could possibly have been drawn by Thomas Bernard Collinson, 1822-1902, who was employed to build the Rutland stockade. The Library holds other views of Wanganui by Collinson from around the same time (at A-292-001/080). Although the handwriting does not match, the drawing styles are very similar Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Wanganui New Zealand / Jan 10 1848 / Fort Stockade / Rutland Stockade [in ink] Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Indian ink on paper, 185 x335 mm, on card backing 280 x 430 mm

[Smith, William Mein] 1799-1869 :Helen's first home. [ca 1860]

Date: 1860

By: Smith, William Mein, 1799-1869

Reference: A-035-034

Description: A two-storied house with associated farm buildings, a garden in front, hills behind, native bush to the right. Possibly in the Wairarapa The identity of 'Helen' has not been established. An early photographic file print of the watercolour was captioned 'Mrs Helen Russell's home' with the associated information that the home's owner was neither Mrs Thomas Purvis Russell, nor Mrs Henry Robert Russell. However, it is likely that "Helen" is the daughter of William Mein Smith and Louisa. She was their first New Zealand born child. She married Robert Russell, a pastoralist, in 1859; and they later moved to England. According to 'New Zealand Spectator and Cook's Strait Guardian' newspaper dated 25 April1860, Helen gave birth to a daughter on 17 April at the residence of Captain W M Smith in Wairarapa. See https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZSCSG18600425.2.4 Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on paper 172 x 255 mm Provenance: Artist's family. Processing information: Record updated on 25 October 2023 with further information on the possible identity of "Helen".
