Description: The scene is outside the rugby grounds where Manawatu were playing the Springboks. Police are searching and frisking spectators on entry to the grounds to prevent protestors from disrupting the game. One policeman is restraining a spectator carrying a placard and telling the Sergeant that the spectator is determined to enter the grounds free-of-charge. Refers to the game played in the Waikato at which protestors against the Springbok tour disrupted the game by running onto the pitch, causing the game to be called off. Description: Shows three scenes. In the top right a helicopter hovers above the pitch providing an escape route for the referee. In the lower left the referee is wearing a special camouflage suit which allows only his head, hands and boots to be visible. In the lower right the players have to be warned not to step on the landmines which have been placed between the pitch and the spectators. Refers to crowd disturbances at Mt Smart stadium on 10 October in which the referee was attacked by spectators. There was a possibility that F.I.F.A. would move the N.Z. versus Saudi Arabia match in November 1981 to a neutral location, possibly in Australia, to avoid violence. It was also suggested that the violence was a hangover from the disruptions which occurred during the 1981 Sprinbok tour of New Zealand. Description: Shows three scenes in which rugby players find ways to stop playing in order to watch the rugby test. The first wants to be ordered off from his game after infringing the rules. The second has been injured and wants ambulance officers to take him to a TV instead of to hospital. The third has arrived home to watch TV after playing a shortened 20 minute game. Description: The cartoon shows an elderly gentleman standing in front of a fire reading a newspaper. He is not at all happy with what he reads. On the surrounding walls are numerous cricket pictures and trophies. Refers to the 1981 Springbok tour, New Zealand cricket, New Zealand's international relations and to the slogan "don't mix politics with sport" voiced by those who supported sporting contacts with South Africa under apartheid. Description: The cartoon shows the All Blacks running out onto the field to play Australia. All of them are covered in bandages from various injuries. Refers to the final test against Australia in 1980. A large number, 12 or more, injuries delayed the naming of the players for the test. In addition the team suffered from a bout of food poisoning on the eve of the match. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation.
