Description: Shows Prime Minister Richard Seddon with muddy hands, as he digs at the site of the Port Chalmers dry dock. He is speaking to a man in suit and hat. The suited man is William Cable, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board in 1904-1905. Description: A headmaster, grand in school tie and scholarly gown, stands on the stage beside a table laden with prize books and cups. Behind the table sit the staff looking deadpan and in front of the stage are the students who accept his statement about Mr Marshall's plan for mediocrity with a mixture of cheerfulness and disbelief. Unrestrained extraction of hot water by bores caused a startling decline in the field's thermal activity between the 1970s and late 1980s, affecting the performance of famous geysers such as Pohutu.But the situation improved after restrictions on use were introduced in 1986 and a ban imposed on drilling new bores within a 1.5km radius of the tourist drawcard Whakarewarewa. Description: A set of vignettes, headed 'The Christchurch Press last week celebrated its jubilee'. At the top left, are two people wrapped up in newspapers (the Press and the Lyttelton Times) shaking hands above a sea marked 'politics' and titled 'hands across the sea'. Top right, two large hands, one marked England, one Germany, pushing the Prince of Wales (later George V) and a German princess towards one another to accompany a text -' it is whispered that there are prospects of a match between the Prince of Wales and the Princess of Germany'. Below that is an angry man holding a Post Office savings box, with accompanying text 'Once money has been placed in the new Post Office money boxes it cannot be removed except by the P. O. officials. The man had been hoping to retrieve money to catch a tram. Below that is a drawing titled 'The other cheek' and featuring Prime Minister William Massey, holding his lower back and facing Auckland M. P. George Fowlds. Surrounding text explains that Massey has offered to pay Fowlds' expenses if he would tour New Zealand repeating his Pukekohe speech. Centre left is an Irish musical group, one with an Irish harp, with Christchurch tossing them coins - 'The Irish envoys on tour in their specialty 'Shell out for Liberty'. To the right is 'The catch of the season' showing a man leaping to catch a ball with accompanying text explaining that Dan Reese anticipates no trouble in rasing the £2000 for Lancaster Park. Bottom left is a scene in Cathedral Square showing the statue of John Robert Godley on top of a tram shelter, with a clock for a face, 'next tram' for a hat, and one arm pointing to Railway, the other to Opawa. The accompanying text reads 'The good old tram-shelter - Godley statue question has cropped up again... Why not do away all sentiment & put the statue to some practical use?'. At the bottom right is William Massey swinging a cat labelled 'Supreme Court allocation' facing 'Mrs Conservative Press'. The accpmanying text reads 'Mrt Massey in spite of the protests of a section of the Opposition press continues to support Mr Allen's legislation for Supreme Court judges. Description: Shows Jim Anderton knocking John Kirk backwards out of his seat (labelled 'Sydenham') by pressing a button on the side of the chair. David Lange looks on in bewilderment. Refers to July 1983, when John Kirk announced that he would not seek the Labour Party's nomination for Sydenham in the 1984 election. In his place Labour selected Jim Anderton, the party president, whereupon Kirk (a strong David Lange supporter) declared that he would stand against the official Labour candidate as an independent. Description: A man sits comfortably in his armchair reading a newspaper. Through the window there is a view of an attractive garden. His wife comes in and reads over his shoulder the large headlines 'Shutdown of inefficient bores'; she assumes this means that parliamentary broadcasts are going to stop and is delighted, but she hasn't seen the smaller print below saying 'Rotorua steam crisis". The cartoon makes a comment on the opinion of some people about the broadcasting of parliament. It also refers to the problem of too many bores being drilled in Rotorua and thus geothermal activity being dangerously reduced.
