Description: Several young men working on the trunk of a large tree, while others hold firebrands and fire rages in the bush beyond. A flock of birds are in the sky, top left Very similar to 'Burning the bush, Taranaki, 1856' a watercolour at E-453-f-008. 'Bush burning' has a similar trunk fallen across the centre and a man with a firebrand, with the fire just behind the people and the large trunk. The arrangement of the figures and of some surrounding trees and plants is different in 'Burning the bush' and a stronger atmosphere of fear of the fire is present in the latter.
