Description: A Maori man kneeling with a snare on the end of a long pole, some food on another pole, a weka approaching the snare. Another bird lies dead by the man. The man is probably Kehu, who accompanied Heaphy and Thomas Brunner to the West Coast (Arahura) from Nelson in 1846. Description: Shows a long view down Lake Rotoroa (probably looking south), with Heaphy, Fox, Brunner and Kehu in a rowboat with their baggage, near the start of their exploratory journey of 1846. They are shown in the left foreground of the picture. In the far distance is a range of rocky mountains, and to the right of the lake are stands of tall trees and smaller bush. One of the hillsides facing the lake has experienced a landslide which has cleared it. The watercolour has been made on two pages now stuck together, and have been taken from the artist's sketchbook of the exploratory trip. Unlike the other views, it was not sent to England for use by Fox's employers, the New Zealand Company. Fox "discovered" and named Lake Howick, which later reverted to its Maori name, Rotoroa. Exhibited in 'Picturing Paradise; the colonial watercolours of William Fox', Exhibition at National Library Gallery 25 February - 18 June 2000; Hocken Library, Dunedin, 11 September - 15 October 2000. The Peter McLeavey Gallery sold it on behalf of Mr Pitts-Brown.

Description: A broad grassy plain with scattered clumps of bush surrounded by high hills. Four men (Fox, Heaphy, Brunner and their guide Kehu) are standing on a raised area to the left pointing at the plain, their baggage at their feet. An incident in the extensive explorations undertaken by Fox, Heaphy, Brunner and Kehu in 1846, when they set off from Nelson and tramped through to the West Coast and back. Fox, Heaphy and Brunner were the first Europeans to cover this ground. They were guided by Kehu, a Maori already familiar with the area. Description: Shows the Maori guide Kehu snaring a weka with a lure of food on a stick and a long pole with a noose. To the right is a makeshift open-fronted slab hut, a small fire burning outside, with the artist's two European companions, Charles Heaphy and Thomas Brunner reclining inside. The Matakitaki River and hills are in the background. Mount Mantell is the cone-shaped hill to the right. Recorded by Fox on his 1846 journey from Nelson through to the West Coast and back with Charles Heaphy and Thomas Brunner. Description: Coastline of Arahura district, Westland, looking south with Mount Cook in the distance and a sailing ship offshore, near the mouth of the Taramakau River. Possibly the earliest view of this coastline and Mount Cook from the land. Similar images are held by the British Library, in a private collection in Basel and reproduced in Hochstetter's New Zealand (Stuttgart, 1867). Middle Island was an earlier name for New Zealand's South Island. Dates from Heaphy's five-month long exploration from Nelson to the West Coast near Hokitika, in company with William Fox, Thomas Brunner and Kehu, March-August 1846. They were the first Pakeha to visit the Poutini Ngai Tahu settlements in Westland and to establish Mount Cook as New Zealand's highest mountain.
