Description: Shows a red-cloaked figure with a spear making a speech to a seated circle of armed and cloaked men, before a large-trunked tree in bush. At right a shallow cliff drops to a beach with 6 canoes drawn up, and seven figures standing beside them. In the right distance are three sailboats, and on the horizon, part of an island or headland. Previously attributed at different times to Charles Blomfield (according to Graham Chote of International Art Centre, Parnell), and to Nicholas Chevalier. Inscriptions: Unsigned and undated. Provenance: Bought with another small oil by the same hand (G-230-2), by Dr Neville Hogg, Dargaville, at International Art Centre, Auckland, 1976. Description: An extensive hilly landscape in the Waikato near Matamata with Firth in the centre by his horse, surrounded by large numbers of Maori. A monument to Tamihana Tarapipipi Te Waharoa is on the right not far from the Wairiri waterfall on the far right. The meeting took place in 1870 The painting was reviewed in the Daily Southern Cross, 8 June 1876, p.3: The artist has faithfully depicted the interview, and the beautiful landscape amidst which it took place. The chief personages, the armed band, Thompson's monument, the distant woods of Matamata and the grand mountain chain, with the magnificent waterfall of Wairiri, and the noble peak of Te Aroha mountain in the distance, are well placed on the canvas, and when finished, promise to complete a picture interesting for its historic facts and scenic beauty'. Firth's "friendly natives" fled to the Waikato settlements, while his sons were sent to Cambridge. The next day, Firth met Te Kooti at Tamihana's monument, accompanied by two chiefs and an interpreter. Description: The cartoon shows a man in his pyjamas, who has got up in the middle of the night to listen to 1st test of the 1949 tour to South Africa. A burglar who has been robbing the man's house has stopped what he's been doing and is secretly listening to the rugby match as well. Refers to the 1st test against the Springboks on the 1949 tour. Exhibited in 'Guts and Glory' an exhibition of rugby cartoons, organised by the New Zealand Cartoon Archive Trust in association with the Alexander Turnbull Library, National Library of New Zealand, at the National Library Gallery, 15 July - 7 November 1999, and then touring until 2001. Description: Shows the rapids leaving the lake, at Frankton, the outlet of the Kawerau River. There is a three-storey mill building with a waterwheel attached on the water's edge at the right. In the left background, on the other side of the rapids is a group of farm buildings, belonging to the farm owned by W G Rees between 1862 and 1867. The mill at right has been identified as Robertson and Hallenstein's Brunswick mill (see F G W Miller's "Golden days of Lake Country" (Christchurch, 1961), page 112 (ATL 993.1 MILL). Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - [Title] Compare a similar view by William Fox, WC-327, titled by Fox 'Mr Rees' Station, Lake Wakatipu'. It has been dated by the Library 1864, when Fox is known to have visited Lake Wakatipu. The mill building is not yet present in Fox's view.
