Tramping in the Rimutaka and Tararua ranges and a trip to the West Coast

Description: Opens with a group of men on a tramp into the valley of the Orongorongo River in the southern Rimutaka Ranges. Included are views of the river and surrounding mountains, in particular Mount Matthews which they climbed posing for a photograph at the Mt Matthews trig station. There are views in the native forest and one looking over the Wainuiomata Valley. One image shows a group of men standing on the Fernside Railway Station labled as the "Mt Hector Party". This probably relates to a group of photographs later in the album recording a tramp in the Taraua Ranges. A group of five photographs records a trip to the Dawson Falls on Mount Egmont. There are views of the road leading to the falls through native forest, the group sitting on a huge rock below the falls, and the falls themselves. The other images in this group show the party on the Mountain, and loaded onto a cart at Eltham. Two pages of views of Days Bay, Lower Hutt, showing individual houses, Croyden School, and coastal scenes. A surveying trip to Kapiti Island. Views of the western cliff face of the island, the caretaker's house and surroundings, a tame deer, nautilus shells, and H E Girdlestone standing beside an 8 inch micrometer on a tripod. Views of the Volcanic Plateau showing Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro and the surrounding plains. The departure of the Main Expeditionary Force from Wellington during the First World War. The focus of these images is on the transports moored at the wharves, and the two escorting warships, the Japanese "Ibuki" and the British H M S "Minotaur", in the harbour. A group of women playing golf on the Waiwhetu golf links Family and friends at Eastbourne. Trip to the West Coast and the glaciers. Views of the main road south of Ross passing through heavy native forest, the Franz Josef Glacier and people climbing its ice fields, Mount Tasman, the Toaroha Rapids, and the Fox Glacier. There are also views of the Pelorus River and Bridge, the Buller Gorge, the Buller River, and the bridge on the road between Lyell and Inangahua. A general view of Greymouth where the party stayed with friends whoes two children were photographed driving peddle cars. A southern crossing of the Tararua Ranges. The route was by way of Mount Reeves, then down into the Tauherenikau River valley, along the river, then up to Mount Alpha and along the ridges to Hector and out again along the Waiotauru River to Otaki Forks. There are two photographs of members of the tramping party, as well as general views of the ranges, the rivers, a mountain tarn, and the Waihoanga Bridge. Description: Album of photographs taken by Percy James William Simmons of the 15th Reinforcements of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 1916-1917. Includes scenes on the troop ship 'Ulimaroa' en route to Plymouth, Sling Camp and surrounding villages, Messines, and London and Edinburgh on leave. Percy Simmons, son of Edgar and Harriet Simmons of Taumarunui, was engaged to Elsa Bass, a teacher. He sent the photographs to her until his death in action in France, on 8 October 1918, aged 29 years. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Remedial treatment camps for unfit men

Description: Most of the photographs relate to the remedial treatment camp set up in Rotorua. On the first page, the photographs are flanked by newspaper cuttings about another camp set up for the same purpose at Papakura, Auckland. The photographs on this page may relate to the Papakura camp. Most of the photographs are of groups of men doing various forms of excersise, and playing sport. There are group photographs of men in military uniform and others of groups posing with tennis raquets and medicine balls. Other photographs record the launch of "Bonds for Bombers" campaign in Rotorua, March 1942, and the ANZAC parade 1942 (also Rotorua). There are seven original cartoon drawings of military personnel by Stenberg. These were used in the Rotorua camp's newspaper. The photographs are supported by many newspaper cuttings about the camps and their purpose. There is a photograph relating to the camp newspaper "The Arawa Guerilla" and two copies of the paper are pasted onto the same page. Other newspaper cuttings and two programmes relate to a very successful entertainment developed by the men in the Rotorua camp. This was "Splitzkreig Army Review" which from September 1942 to March 1943 toured the upper North Island and raised 2,000 pounds for the Patriotic Fund. Remedial treatment camps were set up for men who had been judged by the military medical authorities as unfit for military service, but whoes ailments were considered curable. Examples of the sorts of conditions treated are knee problems, flat feet, \"underdevelopment,\" nervous conditions, and chronic backache. The Rotorua camp occupied Arawa Park, and the racecourse. Description: Album probably compiled by Keith Southward, a New Zealand airman in World War II, showing training in New Zealand, Canada (Halifax) and England. Opens with a group photograph of women and airmen at the ANZAC Club in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Panama Canal taken March 1942 on the way to Canada. Views of Halifax, airmen, and convoy which took them to Britain. Servicemen in Bounmouth, England, and views of Bournemouth. Views of London, some of its notable buildings, and bomb damage. Views of the lake district aquired on a trip taken in August 1942. Many pages of postcards, commercial photographs of cities and villages visited in England. These are interspersed with photographs of airmen and other people. There are also three pages of photographs of Oxford training aircraft, probably taken in Canada. Maori Battalion on the way from New Zealand to Egypt

Description: Personal record of a soldier in the Maori Battalion of the journey from New Zealand to Egypt, Second World War. Begins with troops lined up on the show grounds at Palmerston North on the 31st of April 1940. Troops embarked on the 1st of May 1940 and sailed for Fremantle, Australia, and were there by the 8th of May. There are photographs of Fremantle Harbour, Perth University, and Maori soldiers with Australian friends. Also photographs of Maori soldiers on deck of ship. The troops sailed from Femantle in a convoy that included the liner transports, Queen Mary, Aquitania, Empress of Japan, Empress of Britain, Mauretania, and Andes. They were in Capetown on the 16 May 1940, and Freetown, Siera Leone on the 23 May. The convoy arrived at Greenock on the Clyde River, Scotland, on the 6th of June 1940. From the 8th of June 1940 to the 2nd of January 1941 the troops were stationed in the south east of England where they did battle training. The places include Bognor, Aldershot, Bostling Green, and Guildford. On the 3rd of January the troops embarked on the Athlone Castle, part of a large convoy of transports and warships bound for Egypt, which they reached on the 1st of March 1941. There are two panoramic views of the convoy, and many photographs of the Maori troops on board the Athlone Castle. In Egypt photographs show the troops landing, the camp at Maadi, gardens at Helwan, training in the desert, views of Cairo, and tours to the pyramids. The last part of the album are photographs of Capetown and its surroundings, other unidentified places, and more snaps taken in Egypt. Quantity: 1 album(s).

Hansen family : Papers

Description: Estate papers of W F Hansen and his father Anders. These include correspondence, diaries, autograph books, insurance papers, accounts, property papers, papers re British & Continental Film Company Ltd, 1920s. The diaries of Elizabeth Hansen, 1928-1932, 1954-1959, 1962, 1964, contain brief daily entries describing her domestic activities, weather conditions, involvement in community work and the Methodist Church. The early diaries were kept while the Hansens were in Featherston (the period immediately following their marriage). From 1954, after Fred Hansen died, Elizabeth lived at Masterton. Included in some of the diaries are newspaper clippings which report on church and community affairs. Contains letters by Anne Hansen aboard the `Rangitata', in England and Ireland to Fred and Lizzie Hansen in Masterton, New Zealand. Anne describes her daily life and travel and discusses family matters. Also contains a letter from Lena Cook (nee Hansen) while on holiday in Melbourne and a letter from an ex-soldier Elyabill Harrold to Fred Hansen following Fred's return from World War One. See ATL-Group-00334 for photographic material relating to the Hansen family. William Frederick Hansen's father, Anders Hansen was a lighthouse keeper. Fred Hansen was born at Cape Saunders, Westport. He was a tunneller in World War One. Elizabeth and Fred Hansen lived at Featherston and later moved to Masterton where Fred died in 1953. Mrs Eileen Tiller (née Hansen) is the niece of Mrs and Mrs Hansen. Quantity: 32 volume(s). 9 folder(s). 0.71 Linear Metres.
