Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Aerial views, exterior views and interior views of the Gear Meat Company at Petone, between 1955 and 1963. Includes sheep in holding pens, various areas of the meat works showing activities such as skinning, whole carcasses, various stages of preparation for packaging meat for the local market and for transport overseas; further products including canned meat; tallow; hides; wool; and fertilizer. Vehicles for the transportation of meat include ships at London Docks unloading frozen carcasses, and a fleet of delivery vans for the local wholesale trade. One photograph shows Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh) visiting the meat works in 1956, coincidentally at the time of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Gear Meat company. Different Gear Meat Company shops are shown, in Jackson Street, Petone; in Upper Hutt; and at 94/98 Lambton Quay. The first `Primary Fresh Foods' shop opened by the company at 12 Bunny Street, Lower Hutt, is seen on opening day with a delicatessen section as well as meat department. There are exterior and interior views of the different shops. A number of views show hostel accomodation for meat workers, showing exterior views, a bedroom, a kitchen for communal use, and a social hall. The final section shows the Gear Meat stall at Hutt Valley Industries Fair, 19-27 August, 1960; and their stall at the Manawatu & West Coast Agricultural & Pastoral Association Show in November 1962. An envelope inserted at the back of the album contains views of sheep holding pens, further scenes of the interior of an abatoir, and one view of the Gear Homestead. Shows Sharon and Arafat as two dogs. Sharon is huge and dangerous and Arafat is small and timid. George W Bush points out Arafat as being the dangerous dog and the other needing to be put on a lead for his own protection. Comparing the Black Caps cricket performance with the teachers strike. The Beehive is bombarded by a swarm of Painted Apple Moth demanding an apology from Helen Clark. Refers to all the apologies Clark has given recently. Nandor Tanczos argues that using cannabis has never done him any harm. Helen Clark defends her position on giving special treatment to Maori. Walking frames are unloaded ready for a political address by Winston Peters. Helen Clark prays to God to look after the country while she campaigns. She reassures God she'll pick the job up again on the 28th of July (the day after the election). Jim Anderton receives a gold Mickey Mouse watch from his former Alliance Party colleagues. A New Zealand couple receive a written apology from Helen Clark for the things she will do once back in power. Helen Clark and Bill English get breifed about not hitting below the belt. Helen Clark's belt (popularity) goes all the way up to her arm-pits and Bill English's belt only comes up to her knees. A storm cloud (resurgent unionism) rains over a school. The forecast is for continuing stormy weather for the next three years. Helen Clark stands on a chair screaming as 4 large rats (Rising Dollar, Falling Commodity Prices, Popularity Decline, Rising Interest Rates) approach her. A child comments on the 2002 snap election. Helen Clark does the Dance of the Seven Veils with possible election dates. The audience call for her to give them a date. A man is about to take a pill (rural GP subsidy) but it is too little to help with his condition, a giant knife (rural dissolution policies) through his body. Shows Winston Peters using immigration to brew up trouble as a way of getting back into power. Comment on the number of apologies the Prime Minister has been making. Comment on the likelihood of the Teacher Settlement Package being ratified. Shows Helen Clark ticking off the list of apologies she's planning to make. Comment on the possibility of a mad-cow disease outbreak in New Zealand. Shows Helen Clark holding firm on not letting anything out in regards to the possible election date. Description: Top two labels show the same scene of Mt Taranaki, framed between a Maori whare and a cabbage tree (probably based on Allom's lithograph of Heaphy's view of Mt Egmont). As well there are decorative panels of an Oriental style. Bottom label shows a view of the central mountain plateau, with a ship coming into harbour in the foreground. This view is flanked by pictures of a cabbage tree and a tree fern. There is a picture of a ship at the mouth of a port (possibly the mouth of the Whanganui River) on the other half of the label.
