Description: The grandstand at the Whakatane races, photographed during the visit of Lord Ranfurly and party on St Patricks Day, 17 March 1904, by Malcolm Ross. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - The Grand Stand, Whakatane Races Malcolm Ross, in "Through Tuhoe Land" (Christchurch Press, 1904) states that "Next day being St Patrick's Day, our landlady, who hailed from the Emerald Isle, presented us with shamrocks and bits of green ribbon. The Governor drove to the Whakatane race meeting, a smart native contingent under white officers forming an escort.... Arrived at the course we were conducted to a pretty little grandstand, roofed and walled with interwoven fern and leaves of nikau palm." Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Photogprahs of New Zealand circa 1890s to 1900s, probably taken by George William Barltrop. The first sequence includes scenes around Auckland harbour, including Rangitoto Onehunga, with one view of passengers on board the ferry `SS Takapuna'. One photograph shows a group of young Maori standing on the bank of the Whanganui River (four young men under an umbrella). Wellington area views of Pahautanui (Pauatahanui), Horokiwi, Lyall Bay and the Wellington Heads. On page 873 (the album pages run from 856 to 895), there is a postcard with heads of George William Barltrop and his wife Emma Jane Barltrop, with a collage of images relating to the Missions to Seamen. Slipped beneath the postcard is the death notice for Emma Jane Barltrop (died 24 September 1954). There are views of the Rimutakas from the railway line; a flock of sheep being herded along a road in palmerston North; three people standing outside a wooden bungalow in Palmerston North; and there is a view of another house in Feilding. The river mouth at Oroua; the grounds of the Wanganui Race Course (with white swans on the lake; a woman feeding a peacock, and a woman under an umbrella, walking on rail tracks beside the sea at Castlecliff; followed by three views from a boat on the Whanganui River, one a view of Upokongaro, with the church spire just visible, and two of groups of Maori waiting on the riverbank. Description: Views of the Chatham Islands, with emphasis on the house "Te Whariki" at Tuku, various aspects of wool baling, and wool transportation using a bullock team, and the landscape near Tuku. A number of images show buildings at Waitangi, Chatham Island, including the post office, the Mangoutu Hotel (also known as Odman's Hotel), the courthouse, and Heslop's Hotel. The house "Te Whariki" was built by E. Guest, but seems to be the home of Harry Blyth who appears in a number of the images. Harry Blyth is the collector of the images in the album, and possibly the photographer of some. It is also possible that some photographs were taken by Ernest Guest (photographer and postmaster), and some by Blyth's wife, Daisy Felicia Blyth (nee Cox), who was a photographer in her own right (see Turnbull Library Biographies Index) Title supplied by Library. Description: Photographs taken by Maurice Henry Hayward while on a work relief scheme on the Chatham Islands building a new wharf at Waitangi. Included are views of Waitangi and its principle buildings, the Post Office, the hotels and the radio station. Also depicted is race day, bullock teams, horses hauling wool bales on sledges, sheep waiting at Waitangi Wharf, human bones, Tommy Solomon's funeral, a shipwreck, the countryside, and coastal views. Throughout the album are images of the old wharf at Waitangi, and the new one under construction and finally completed. There is a record of a tramping and hunting trip made by three or four men, one of whom was Hayward, and two interior views of the living quarters for the relief workers.
