Description: Photograph album created by Neville H Mosen of Raetithi. Contains views related to trips taken by the Tongariro Tramping Club and views related to the Mosen family and friends. Taken by Neville Mosen circa 1936 to 1937, and possibly some taken by other unidentified photographer(s). Contains scenic views and views of the Club members on bush walks and skiing in Tongariro National Park, featuring Ruapehu, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and surrounding environs, the Pinnacles at Blue Bluffs, Ruapehu crater lake, Tama Lakes, The Chateau, Whakapapa glacier, Karioi Lakes, Mangawhero River and various tramping huts. Bruce Davis, an amateur photographer who lived in Raetihi is identified. Also includes views of Raetihi township and Horopito locality, Napier, Tauranga (rail bridge and The Strand), and Ngauruhoe erupting (possibly 1937 eruption). Also includes views of Tom Parker posing with the fountain he gifted to Napier in 1936 and scenes of a parade and bonfire in Raetihi to mark the coronation of King George VI in 1937. Description: Opens with a group of men on a tramp into the valley of the Orongorongo River in the southern Rimutaka Ranges. Included are views of the river and surrounding mountains, in particular Mount Matthews which they climbed posing for a photograph at the Mt Matthews trig station. There are views in the native forest and one looking over the Wainuiomata Valley. One image shows a group of men standing on the Fernside Railway Station labled as the "Mt Hector Party". This probably relates to a group of photographs later in the album recording a tramp in the Taraua Ranges. A group of five photographs records a trip to the Dawson Falls on Mount Egmont. There are views of the road leading to the falls through native forest, the group sitting on a huge rock below the falls, and the falls themselves. The other images in this group show the party on the Mountain, and loaded onto a cart at Eltham. Two pages of views of Days Bay, Lower Hutt, showing individual houses, Croyden School, and coastal scenes. A surveying trip to Kapiti Island. Views of the western cliff face of the island, the caretaker's house and surroundings, a tame deer, nautilus shells, and H E Girdlestone standing beside an 8 inch micrometer on a tripod. Views of the Volcanic Plateau showing Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro and the surrounding plains. The departure of the Main Expeditionary Force from Wellington during the First World War. The focus of these images is on the transports moored at the wharves, and the two escorting warships, the Japanese "Ibuki" and the British H M S "Minotaur", in the harbour. A group of women playing golf on the Waiwhetu golf links Family and friends at Eastbourne. Trip to the West Coast and the glaciers. Views of the main road south of Ross passing through heavy native forest, the Franz Josef Glacier and people climbing its ice fields, Mount Tasman, the Toaroha Rapids, and the Fox Glacier. There are also views of the Pelorus River and Bridge, the Buller Gorge, the Buller River, and the bridge on the road between Lyell and Inangahua. A general view of Greymouth where the party stayed with friends whoes two children were photographed driving peddle cars. A southern crossing of the Tararua Ranges. The route was by way of Mount Reeves, then down into the Tauherenikau River valley, along the river, then up to Mount Alpha and along the ridges to Hector and out again along the Waiotauru River to Otaki Forks. There are two photographs of members of the tramping party, as well as general views of the ranges, the rivers, a mountain tarn, and the Waihoanga Bridge. Description: Collection of photographs created and probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell, from the time of her marriage to Frederick McWhannell. The first scene shows them on their honeymoon, at One Tree Hill in Auckland, on 13th November 1922. From there they go to Whangarei, with views of the Whangarei Hospital, men playing tennis, a group of three men and a woman entitled `The foundations of "Fairview" Onerahi', and Whangarei Falls. Following Whangarei are a number of views of Russell, including the jetty and `The Gables', and the yacht `Kitty fraser'. Later in November they reach the Coromandel Peninsula, and photographs include Cyril Cory-Wright in the launch `Eilepa', and a photograph of Mrs Cory-Wright with her children Patsy and Derek; and the Reverend Norrie (minister of the Coromandel Peninsula). The next group of photographs show Mrs Shires, and scenes of sheep mustering at `Oruru', Kaitieke in the King Country. At the front of the album is an envelope with mostly unidentified people, taken much later, most of them being coloured. Also inserted in the album is a newspaper cutting from the Herald (Section 2, Wednesday 13 June 1984), on a young couple (Tony and Sue Clark) who had managed to create a successful farm from very rough hill country on the Kawhautahi Road, near Kaitieke. Description: 11 scenes of crowds awaiting the arrival of the first rail car on the line at Pahiatua. They include one of the crowd on the Masterton platform; another taken from the middle of the tracks with the crowds looking towards the photographer; and another of a man addressing the crowd from the driver's compartment. A railcar of the type in the photographs was trialed in May 1936 but these images look as if they were taken later. Seven railcars were built and the one in this collection is most likely to be Maahunui with the running number 4, as part of the name is visible in 1/4-029734. The railcar had a petrol engine, a lavatory, electric light and hot air heating and was driver controlled (information from Godber album PA1-q-101 p.96). Photographer unidentified.
