Description: View along Invercargill's main street showing a number of houses and businesses. The earliest known view of Invercargill Between 1969, the time of acquisition by the Library, and 2010, attributed to W B D Mantell, based on handwriting, style of drawing and the fact that Mantell worked with Douglas, and was involved in the early settlement of Invercargill. However Mantell was in England in 1858, the date of this drawing. The drawing was earlier owned by Gerhard Mueller, who arrived in New Zealand in 1859, the year after this drawing was made. The `Pearson' whose house is drawn is W H Pearson, Commissioner of Lands, 1857-1884. `Grief' the butcher was J M Grieve. The Albion Hotel was also known as Linds Accommodation House. Along top, identifications of buildings include Whites store, Collins store, Collins Goods, Grief Butcher, Pearsons House, Butchershop, Royal Hotel. Description: Map drawn by Te Wharekorari for W. B. D. Mantell in 1848 showing the South Island lakes Ohau, Pukaki, and Tekapo and the rivers draining and filling them. It is probable that Te Wharekorari drew the lines of the map and dictated the Maori names to Mantell, who recorded them in the correct areas. Description: Several images on one pagle. At the top of the page, two shacks and a cabbage tree, 'Smith's station' at the mouth of the Waianakarua, looking inland, with the river to the right. Left, below that, Taiaroa standing on the beach, staff in hand, appearing to be speaking, observed by several people lying down. The title refers to Rauparaha's conquest of the east coast and to the local paramount chief's defiance while Rauparaha is safely in the North Island on Kapiti. Below on the right, three drawings of the same man's head in a bonnet, and a right-angles, a coastal view looking north along the beach from Onekakara, Moeraki, with several canoes pulled up on shore to the left. At the bottom left of the page, a cryptic drawing possibly of a rocky outcrop, titled Penal Sett.
