Description: Shows the stamper battery established on the Golden Crown claim in Thames, about 1868. Features a single-storey building with a tall chimney. Other smaller buildings, likely to be miners' dwellings, and roadways are established on the hills behind. A flagpole bearing two flags stands to the right side of the painting. The scene is dotted with figures, all male Gold was first discovered in Thames in 1867. Thames soon had 693 stamper batteries pounding quartz rock as part the gold extraction process and by the 1880s, logging had also been established in the area Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - JC Hoyte / 18[?] [in brushpoint] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows a bush scene with a path at the right and a narrow stream at the left. Notes by the artist on the verso indicate that he used only blue, chrome yellow, burnt umber and chinese white - "no other pigments whatever". Date estimated from the contents of a newspaper extract from the Thames Star, 31 December 1894, page 2, which states: "Sir, I know a man who went by the name of Teddy Monkhouse, who was doing a bit of painting and a property man at Johnny Hall's old American Theatre, at Shortland, in 1868. He left here in 1869, and I never heard of him after that" - signed Jas W Anderson, Thames, 31 December 1894. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows a narrow curved beach below a steep hilside sloping down from the right. Two prospectors, one with a pick, and one with a backpack, walk away along the sand beside the water. There is a rocky outcrop in the left foreground. On the hillside in the right foreground a flume descends as drainage from a mine. In the middle distance is a building with smoking chimney; this may function as part of the mining operations. On the hillside further away along the bay are several pitched tents of the miners' camp. A steep path descends from the slope above the building in the central distance. Location is possibly Shortland, showing the Firth of Thames in the left distance. The Shortland area was opened up in 1867. Hoyte moved from the Auckland area to Dunedin by 1876. Description: Shows a view looking towards open water between a low tongue of land at the left, and the higher landing place at the right, with six boats drawn up by the bank and three others in the water. Above the landing place men work unloading and carrying, and a horse and cart is employed. Behind this are a group of buildings, one with a flag flying from its roof. There is a steamboat in the left distance in open water. Title taken from item. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Shortland landing place from inside the Creek Auckland Museum holds a similar sketch of the same location called "The creek and landing place, Shortland.
