Description: Page 288 of the 'The Graphic' weekly newspaper of London, dated 17 March 1883. Page shows two engraved illustrations made by 'The Graphic' staff. The upper engraved illustration is captioned "New Zealand to-day - the North-Shore Regatta, Auckland; a race between Maori war canoes" and shows a view of Auckland Harbour, with yachts and Maori waka racing, and shows signature of Charles Bloomfield in lower left corner "C. Blomfield 1882". The lower engraved illustration is captioned "New Zealand sixty years ago - Maori war canoes racing off Cape Brett, North island, on their return from a war expedition" and shows a view of two waka taua in seas off rocks at Cape Brett. The engraving illustrations were made from two photographs taken by Messrs Hemus and Hanna, Auckland, of two paintings. The upper illustration is based on a painting by Charles Bloomfield titled "The North Shore Regatta and Maori war canoe race", and the lower illustration is based on a painting by C K Watkins titled "A Maori war canoe race off Cape Brett". The photographs were sent to 'The Graphic' by Messrs Champtaloup and Cooper, 76 Queen Street, Auckland. Description: Nine engravings that appeared in the Graphic, from a trip taken by Miss Outhwaite and probably Gertrude Flora Cooke-Yarborough, in about December 1877. The trip began at Waitangi and went to Taheke, Herd's Point, Waitangi Falls, Rakau Para School, Tautahihi. Mr von Sturmer, Mrs Yarborough and Mr Marriner are mentioned in the handwritten notes. A published account of the journey is in the Graphic (London), 29 March 1879, page 315.
