Date: 2009

From: Smith, Ashley W, 1948- :[Digital cartoons published in the Shipping Gazette, MG Business, or Presto]

Reference: DCDL-0012393

Description: Cappucino Dreams. In the first of four frames Finance Minister Bill English carrying his briefcase and a load of banknotes labelled 'housing subsidy', explains that he must work here in Wellington even though his home is in Southland. In the second frame his children are shown learning the ways of commerce in the school tuckshop; in the third frame Bill English explains that our experts have been able to postpone climate change until the farmers and carbon burners have made their profits and in the last frame he is shown arriving at his Karori home with the Beehive in the distance and 'Southland' on the gate. Refers to Bill English's embarrassing struggle with his Karori houng subsidy, and to the New Zealand's ETS strategy, a deal that has been stitched up between the National government and the Maori Party without the Labour Party that has resulted in taxpayers subsidizing big business and farmers for the next four years. (until 2013) The deal between the two parties provides that the new emissions trading scheme (ETS) will halve the cost of energy increases to consumers but polluting industries will have an easier ride and longer to adjust through taxpayer subsidies. "If you close your eyes, hold your nose, and swallow - They're yum" 12 September 2009

Date: 2009

From: Slane, Christopher, 1957-: Digital cartoons published in the Listener, New Zealand Herald, or New Zealand Farmers' Weekly

Reference: DCDL-0012326

Description: Cartoon shows Prime Minister, Phil Goff in a can of worms labelled 'John's electoral system turmoil' and Minister for Local Government, Rodney Hide, in a second can of worms labelled 'Rodney's Chunky Auckland Super City Chaos'. In the background is a third can labelled 'Ministerial Housing Rort'. John Key says that if you hold your nose and shut your eyes they are yum. Refers to the decision that the Government will spend millions of dollars holding a referendum on whether MMP should be dumped - a system Prime Minister John Key thinks New Zealanders are increasingly comfortable with. Mr Key said National would hold the referendum to honour its election pledge and let people "kick the tyres" of the electoral system. Refers also to the rows over the supercity which are about Maori representation on the council and how much of Auckland is included among other things. Date: 2009

From: Scott, Thomas, 1947- :[Digital cartoons published in the Dominion Post]

Reference: DCDL-0012478

Description: The cartoon shows a town planner trying to persuade a surf life-saver and a chef from the Maranui Surf Life Saving Club to accept a plan for a 'gleaming featureless edifice that could be anywhere' rather than return to the 'draughty, creaky, noisy, old, admittedly quaint building that's utterly unique to this coastline'. On Saturday 1st August 2009 the club was severely damaged by a fire caused by damaged electrical wiring. The fire started in the basement of the building and worked its way through to the ground level store room and up into the cafe. Destruction of the area of the store room and office meant that most of the records and archives of the club and cafe were destroyed. The building has a hole through the centre and there is significant fire, smoke and water damage to most of the building. However, the structural damage is around 25% and this gives the club confidence that the building will be repaired. The building owners, Wellington City Council, will make this decision within the next few weeks in consultation with their insurers. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
