Description: Tony Nolan traces the various attempts at climbing Mount Cook - The siege of Mt Cook started in 1882 with the arrival of Rev. Green - an Irishman, and Swiss companions - Emil Boss and Ulrich Kaufmann, making valiant attempts and almost succeeding. This near-success jolted some local boys into action - Kenneth & Malcolm Ross and Marmaduke Dixon. However, it was at 1.30 o'clock on the afternoon of Christmas Day 1894 that three young climbers - Tom Fyfe, George Graham and Jack Clarke stood at last on the summit of New Zealand's highest mountain. Description: Small group of men at Trentham Racecourse; church service and re-enactment of the landing of Captain Cook. Photographs taken in 1970 by Ans Westra. Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. The first three frames show a small group of men watching a race standing on the steps of a grandstand at Trentham Racecourse. Frames 4 onwards show a church service and re-enactment of the landing of Captain Cook at Ship's Cove [i.e. Ship Cove] in Marlborough Sounds, during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in March 1970. The first and 6th frames show the Queen wearing a headscarf, greeting people. She is seen seated in the front row of a large audience.
