An unidentified man is sitting on the rails, on a bend in the line which is surrounded by native bush. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber circa 1903. This image is a film negative taken by Godber. Price's Bush was an area owned and milled by Thomas Price (1838-1906), who owned milling operations in Lower Hutt and Petone. Timber transportation, Pukemako bush, east of Mangapehi, Waikato

Description: Forestry workers with timber transportation equipment in the Pukemako bush, 13 miles east of Mangapehi, Waikato. Shows several men standing on a log on a railway system through the trees, and another man on a 1934 Caterpillar diesel 75 tractor with a winch on the back. Photograph taken in 1935 by an unidentified photographer. Publication note - Department of Internal Affairs. 1939. `Making New Zealand' 1(9): 28 For further information regarding the tractor in this photograph see Ken Anderson, Servicing Caterpillar : the story of the Taumarunui branch of Gough Gough & Hamer (Taumarunui [N.Z.] : C & S Publications, 2000). The tractor was on an eight month contract that started in January 1935. Caterpillar dealers Gough Gough and Hamer contracted to sawmillers Ellis and Burnand Ltd, to demonstrate the advantage of using tractors in the bush. Ellis and Burnand purchased the machine at the start of 1936 and used it at Ongarue until 1943 when it went back to Mangapehi. It was eventually scrapped in the early 1950s. Description: Photograph of MP James Carroll and others, sitting on logs to be pulled by horses along the bush railway to the East Coast Timber and Trading Company mill at Tapuihikitea, Gisborne. The party is celebrating the opening of the Waihopi Bridge over the Waipaoa River, which enabled the link between the Gisborne mill and the bush. Photograph taken in 1905 by William Fitzgerald Crawford. Source of descriptive information - From back of file print: `In 1905 when the Waihopi Bridge over the Waipaoa River was opened linking the East Coast Timber & Trading Co mill (owned by the Drummond Bros) at Tapuihikitea with the bush, MP James Carroll & a large party of local noteworthies came for the celebration.
