Description: Electronic transcription of Thomas Laslett's New Zealand journal (4) by Meri Low with support from Dr Neville Ritchie and David Wilton. The transcription was commissioned by the Department of Conservation and completed in September 2014. This transcribed journal was one of three journals re-written by Laslett in 1878-1881 from his original diaries from his four visits to New Zealand in 1833-1834, 1837-1838, 1839-1841, 1841-1843. The journals contain original drawings from the original diaries. On his first voyage, Laslett was carpenter on the HMS Buffalo assisting the Surveyors. And was Timber Inspector for the Admiralty on the HMS Buffalo for three voyages and the HMS Tortoise for the last. The journals contain full descriptions of the ship parties' activities, including descriptions of places, Maori villages, Maori practices, disputes between Maori and between Maori and the ship's party, timber collecting practices including employment of Maori labour, problems between crew and officers, European population, and descriptions of flora. Description: Contains two copies of a document, "The History of Te Rama-Apakura Greenstone Axe". This is made up of an English language narrative; an extract from Bay of Islands Maori Land Court Taitokerau, Minute Book 19 - Folios 65/73, regarding Te Rama-Apakura Greenstone Axe; and evidence of William Cooper. Only one of the copies has both an English and Maori language version of William Cooper's evidence. One includes only the Maori version. The document is typed on Tairawhiti Maori Hockey Federation letterhead. Also five loose sheets "Te Whatuiapiti" [Eponymous ancestor of Ngai Te Whatuiapiti tribe of Hawke's Bay]; "Maori language maramataka, which lists days for planting/not planting and other activities, according to the lunar cycle; "Ramaapakura Greenstone Axe; an 'extract from a sheet of paper handed by Te Kauru Hohepa to the Court during the hearing of claims to the above named Axe'"; blank telegram form; loose sheet with handwritten notes. Description: Digitised journal which records typescript copies of correspondence from Edward Sydney Woods to his family during Woods' visit to New Zealand as the Bishop of Lichfield in 1947 and 1948. Also includes letter for 1952. The letters are addressed to Woods' family and children in England. Many of the letters begin "Beloved Kinders". Included at the beginning of the volume is an itinerary for Woods' visit which details locations visited in Australia and New Zealand as well as ports visited en route from England. Description: Electronic document, typed transcript of Edward (Ted) Charles Rowe's diary kept during the period 1900 to 1903. Entries are in three distinct sections. First part (19 June to 30 August 1900) details his daily activities around Christchurch area, visits to Lyttelton Port, courtship with Mill Francis (who later became his wife), attending various church activities, his depression, visiting his late sister's grave. Second part (27 Dec 1901 to 10 Jan 1902) details a holiday in which he travelled to Napier, Auckland, Wanganui and Wellington on a combination of ships and trains. Mentions friends, places visited and sermons attended. Third part (8 to 22 Dec 1903) details a holiday to Queenstown and Invercargill in which he travelled by train. The Library also holds Wanganui and pier [?] from cave, New Zealand [185-?], published by W E & F Newton (Curios-021-007), showing the scene in a similar way, by an unknown artist. Description: Silver-plated, ovoid-shaped tureen, probably for holding vegetables. Features a roll-top lid with an ivory handle, and decorated legs and carrying handles. Fitted within is a removable shallow oval dish with separate perforated draining tray. Inscriptions: [On front of roll-top lid] Presented to Joseph Lowthian Wilson on his journalistic jubilee, August 13 1913, as a mark of esteem from his co-workers on the staffs [sic] of the Christchurch Press Coy., Ltd.; [On underside of the tureen] EP [three five-pointed stars within the shape of a three-leaf clover] NS 37594 Joseph Lowthian Wilson was the north Canterbury reporter and agent for the Christchurch Press, based in Kaiapoi.
