Description: A view of the Deep Stream, Otago. The Lammerlaw Range rises up dramatically around the stream as it flows over rocks towards the Taieri River Attached to the back is a letter of authentication by the Curator of the Hocken Library Picture Collection, GH Brown, to the watercolour's then owner, Mr CP McCool, of Palmerston North, dated 15 June 1971 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - The Deep Stream near its junction with the Taieri / July 1887 [in ink] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows Clutha River at left, apparently with a flying fox suspended over it. In the centre foreground is a line of washing out to dry, and at right two simple huts. In the background beneath a cliff face is a settlement of possibly 30 or 40 huts. In left distance a range of high hills extends to top of picture. Probably Coal Point, Clyde Has been attributed to William Mathew Hodgkins. While exact location remains to be identified, the scene may be a rare view of the Dunstan (Clyde) diggings. Appears to show a gold mining settlement in Central Otago, an area of interest to William Mathew Hodgkins. The publication "Dunstan Goldfields centennial review" includes a photograph of the official opening of the Hartley and Riley Memorial cairn, taken from a similar viewpoint. Both had been framed as a pair by McGregor Wright Gallery, and purchased by Mr & Mrs Austin. Provenance given to "D.S.L." vendor by niece of W.M. Hodgkins; ie the work has Hodgkins family provenance.

Description: Shows group of six men sitting around a rough wooden table lit by smoking candle in bottle. A waiter dishes food from a large pot at right. A saddle is placed on a rafter above the table, and tools or tramping gear rest against the wall at right. Dated ca 1890 because Mrs Birley is listed in Wises 1890-91 as being a hotel keeper at Glenorchy. Previously she had been listed as a hotel-keeper in Queenstown. By 1892 Wises lists J.K. Birley as the hotel-keeper at Mt Earnslaw hotel, Glenorchy; that may or may not be a grander establishment than the hut shown here. The exterior of the hut is assumed to be the one shown in A-169-031 "at foot of Earnslaw".
