Description: Photographs of Greymouth, Grey River, Brunnerton, Ahaura, Reefton, Waimakariri, Lake Pearson, Lake Brunner, Dillmanstown, Milford Sound, Franz Josef Glacier, Ross, and the thermal areas of central North Island. The photographers represented include William Herbert Perkins, James Ring and the Burton Brothers. There is one interior view of a quartz-crushing battery at Reefton. Description: According to the inscription inside the front cover (by an unidentified person), the date is firmly established as 1884, however the album has a number of photographs of the Tarawera area, both before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. These include views of the White Terraces, one of which has a group of Maori cooking food in the hot pools; a carved house at Te Wairoa, showing interior and exterior before the eruption, and the exterior afterwards; a group of Maori at Te Ariki (one of the places most devastated in the eruption with the loss of many lives. This image has the inscription `Natives of te Ariki first to be killed by eruption'); views of Mount Tarawera covered in mud and ash; and the Old Mill, destroyed in the eruption. Many of the images have the signature initials J.M. (Josiah Martin), and a few have the initials F.A.C (Frank Arnold Coxhead) who may have taken them, but which may just have been printed by him. The last few views are in Tasmania, including Burnie - Emu Bay, and the Guide Falls, near Burnie. Inscriptions: Album page - `Ex libris Brent Gration-Maxfield. 1967'; Album page - `New Zealand. 1884. Description: Album compiled by Spencer Perceval Talbot Nicholl when he was serving with the 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry during the New Zealand wars. The photographs were chiefly taken by John Kinder and by Daniel Manders Beere, in the Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas. Many of the views have no captions, but can be identified in comparison with images known to have been taken by these photographers. Views identified include Mr. Ashwell's church at Taupiri (Rev. Benjamin Yate Ashwell); thatched buildings; flagstaff at Ngaruawahia; the monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; a carved stern-post of a waka; and a group of Maori men. Description: Vigors went to Australia with the 11th Regiment of Foot, in 1846. The diary records a voyage to Auckland, Whangaroa, New Hebrides, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji, with detailed descriptions of places and peoples visited. The manuscript includes illustrative work by Vigors in ink, pencil and watercolour, of land and geographical features, activities and artifacts of Maori life and culture, and of the culture of the various Pacific peoples he encountered and named portraits of persons encountered; annotated paper from New South Wales Parliament re the Botanic Gardens, Sydney; clippings; and letter in French. The `Havannah' was commanded by Captain Erskine A listing of the holdings of the Public Record Office of Ireland relating to Philip Vigors is located in the back file for this collection Source of title - Title page Relationship complexity - Glass plate negatives of illustrations within the volume are held in the Photographic Archve collection (PAColl-6719). Description: Testimonial presented to Stephenson Percy Smith, founder of the Polynesian Society, on his retirement from the position of Surveyor-General and Secretary for Crown Lands, in 1901. The painted testimonial features a list of the names of the officers of the District Lands and Survey branches, and vignettes showing a Māori chief, the landing place of Tainui at Kawhia, Mount Tarawera after the eruption of 1886, and a surveyor's camp and settlement 'at the Kermadecs'. In addition there is a view of the Southern Alps, a Taranaki scene, a surveyors' camp, road-making through dense bush, a pastoral scene with a farmhouse in the distance, a section of kauri forest, and a mining scene at Thames (Grahamstown Goldfield) with working mines, mine machinery and houses. The whole is surrounded and divided into sections by painted Maori carvings, with kowhai, a theodolite, a tree-fern, native clematis, a nikau palm and flax. Title supplied by Library. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, both North and South Islands, taken by Daniel Mundy between 1860 and 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p. 51). The views include a number in the Thames goldfields, with scenes of gold batteries, miners' huts, and a tramway. Mundy includes two rivers which are now differently named, the Tekihe River [i.e. Taheke River], and Tiremakau River [i.e. Taramakau River]. Quantity: 1 album(s). Description: Album of photographs taken 1921 by James Ingram McDonald while on an ethnographic expedition up the Whanganui River. The expedition was undertaken by McDonald, Elsdon Best, Peter Buck, and Johannes Carl Andersen, under the auspices of the Dominion Museum. There are many views of the Whanganui River and villages, including numbers of waka at Koriniti, and views of eel traps across the river. Very detailed sequences of photographs show flax weaving, coarser weave for kete and eel traps, and finer quality for clothing and ceremonial mats. The captions appear to have been added later, in pencil, with some names being unclear. Many of the photographs have copy negatives, some are 1/4 and some 1/2.
