Description: Mita Carter, only remaining elder of the early Wairarapa Maori families, born Te Ore Ore. Outlines family background - father, John Carter was a well known local identity - journalist/lawyer. Gives an account of settlement of the Wairarapa by the Pakeha. Refers to part played in 1853 by Sir George Grey, Donald McLean and other members of the Land Purchase Committee and the Land Purchase Agreement with Mr Carter's ancestors at Pirinoa on the `Hill of Consent' - Whakai. Explains why Maori wanted colonisation. Gives details of settlers and land they took up. Refers to the MacMaster, Hume, Martin, Bidwill families, Sir George Clifford, Captain Mein-Smith and Colenso. Description: Kuini Te Tau was born in 1899. Heather Marunui sits in on the interview and comments. Describes the Health Leagues and the formation of the Maori Women's Welfare League in 1951. Describes being asked by Michael Savage to take charge of women coming to Wellington on essential work during World War II and finding hostel accommodation. Recalls this as the beginning of her welfare work which she did for twenty years. Talks about visiting women at Arohata women's prison. Describes working at Fareham House and changing the approach to care. Talks about the activities of the Maori Women's Welfare League in the Wairarapa and the role of Kuini Te Tau's husband in building houses for Maori. Describes places she has lived and a period of dairy farming. Description: Harata Solomon was born 22 January 1925 in Otaki, one of eleven children, and was brought up in Waikanae. Discusses her name and whakapapa on both parent's sides. Discusses her paternal grandfather, Kaka Kura Wi Parata, a chief of Ngati Te Kowhai, Ngati Toa and Te Atiawa and his wife who was of Ngati Raukawa descent. Talks about arranged marriages, communal living and sharing in Maori society. Discusses Waikanae, living off the land and traditional diet. Talks about her memories of her mother and being looked after by her maternal grandmother after her mother's death. Discusses her father and his involvement with the Ratana religion and her family marae, Whakarongotai, in Waikanae. Talks of her cultural identity, modernity and assimilating into Pakeha culture in the 1930s and 1940s. Recalls her childhood pastimes, memories of the Depression and the number of people the family had staying. Discusses her grandmother's death, the division of labour in Maori society, her bicultural life and Maoritanga. Talks about her education at Waikanae, Hukarere Boarding School and Wellington Teachers' Training College. Talks about Ratana and Mormon teachings and lack of sexual instruction. Discusses her own faith as a member of the the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints and a Mormon. Recalls the Waikanae community and poi, haka, taiaha and mere activities.
