Description: Album of photographs, most taken by the Burton Brothers in New Zealand, including a large number of Maori images, group portraits, identified men and women, pa, and storehouses. Scenes also taken by them in Tonga and Samoa. A number of images show scenes in England, including a group taken near Egremont in Cumbria, of ice on the Mersey River in 1895. There are a large number of copies of paintings of romantic scenes. Description: Album containing photographs of New Zealand scenes, none of which have captions, all taken by an unidentified photographer. There are nine loose photographs inserted in an envelope inside the front of the album. Several of these are scenes of the Franz Josef Glacier; one of a lake with the Southern Alps on the right in the distance; and one of a river bed with the moutain range in the background. Three photographs are of Maori groups. The first shows a large group of young women in the foreground performing in front of a meeting house. They are wearing long white gowns, with dark coloured sashes across their shoulders. Behind them, the heads of men and women, most wearing hats, are visible. The other two images are of a small group, in both of which a kaumataua is seated in the foreground wearing a cloak. The first one shows one man in European dress, a man in soldier's uniform, three women and three children surrounding the kaumatua. The second one focuses on the kaumatua, with three children alongside. The areas seen in the album are possibly in the Hamilton area, one of a ferry passing under a bridge, one of a timber mill, and a number of bridges. Several show the exterior and interior of a church. An ivy-covered lychgate leads to the church with a shingle roof, and high, narrow stained glass windows; the interior shows the main aisle leading to the altar. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Album of newspaper and magazine cuttings, photographs, and prints of paintings in colour and black & white, mostly of Maori subjects, with some images of geographically interesting sites in New Zealand, including Mount Tongariro, Lake Waikaremoana, and the Waimangu Crater. The Maori material includes prints of paintings by Goldie, and prints of paintings of Maori by T. Ryan, some of which are copies of works by Goldie. There is a print of a painting by T. Ryan, showing Tomika Te Mutu, painting done from an original sketch by Horatio Gordon Robley. There are many publicity photographs of Maori, showing clothing, particularly cloaks, and showing various activities in Maori pa, including weaving, firelighting, poi dances, and waka poi. Also includes images of Maori waka on the Waikato River; 2 pages of Maori rock carvings, found in a cave shelter on the Kaingaroa Plains in 1926, and one on Maori god-sticks (Pou whakapakoko).

Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools.
