Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. Description: Album of photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon, including many contacts from 35 mm film, chiefly related to Wellington Camera Club outings. Others relating to photographic outings relate to the Photographic Society of New Zealand, Palmerston North regional meetings in October and November 1956. Many of the photographs show his interest in different lights and shapes, and he often gives details of lenses and filters used. Examples are winter light and shade at the Massey Memorial, a ploughed field near Palmerston North, the new entrance foyer and stairs when the Easterfield Science Block opened at Victoria University of Wellington in June 1959, still life images, flowers, cloud formations, ripples on sand, and light and shade along the Wellington Wharves. Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1927 and 1955, mostly in the Wellington Region. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Specific trips and occasions include a Waikaremoana trip in 1930; the Victoria University College Natural History Society trip to Butterfly Creek in 1933; a Camera Club outing near Mangaroa Hill in 1938; and celebrating Xmas in Auckland in 1952. Description: Scenes of the jubilee of a convent school (possibly St Patrick's) and of Blaketown and its school in 1957. The convent reunion shows ex-pupils grouped by the year they attended the school, a dinner, a table of trophies etc. The Blaketown jubilee is marked by a procession of floats, the creation of a Miss Jubilee, a dinner etc. Also included are a two older copy negatives of Greymouth and scenes on the wharves with what may be a shipwreck and the grounded vessel the Abel Tasman. Description: Planning map of the area from Burnham Wharf to Evans Bay Road. Existing roads are named and a proposed road is marked on an area of reclaimed land. Rongotai Terrace is shown at the site of the proposed airport runway. Blocks of land are prominently colour coded and are referred to in extensive Certification of Title schedules which include total areas. A second Wellington Harbour Board schedule, by D.P. plan references, refers to each block of land. Includes a survey of the sea bed and the reclamation limit is marked, as is the low water mark. The boundary of the harbour bed vested in Wellington Harbour Board M3187 is marked. Area A, adjacent to Miramar Wharf and Aberdeen Quay, includes the the limit of the 1 in 7 batter cut. Topographic features are of slopes and a knoll. Calibar, Wrexford, Watford, Tirangi, Seatoun, Onepu, Wellington and Evans Bay roads are named, as are Salek, Te Whiti, Yule and Coutts streets, also Kilbirnie Crescent. An electric power station is marked adjacent to Watford Road and Salek Street. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides was probably taken earlier than those on some of the preceding sheets (information from his diary). This sheet contains images of Wellington, including Wellington Airport; views from Mount Victoria; around the Wellington coast including shore with marram grass and black-backed gulls; the Petone Settlers' Memorial; Marine Parade around Miramar, with the Monowai sailing through Wellington Heads; buildings in the city including Parliament Buildings, Government Buildings, Wakefield House at 90 The Terrace, used by the Founders Club; and an old two-storeyed wooden house on the Terrace; the Corinthic loading various goods at Wellington Wharves; Lambton Quay; Cable Car terminal and views of Wellington; and the Carter Observatory. Slides on this sheet are numbered 505-528, with a gap for no. 506. Arrangement: Image no. 506 (showing the view from Mount Victoria in Wellington) was taken as part of Williams' representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. Description: Colour transparency slides of New Zealand scenes, taken ca mid to late 1950s and 1960s by Peter Vaizey Conley. This set are taken in the North Island, chiefly coastal views. All are unidentified but the photographer has described this set as 'Picton to Days Bay', 'Muritai [Road, Lower Hutt?] to Wellington Airport', 'Hamilton to Ngaruawahia', 'Waihi Gorge to Tauranga', 'Whakatane to Rotorua', 'Russell to Bay of Islands,' 'Wairoa', and 'North Auckland to Ohope'. Includes: Views of a harbour, taken onboard a ship, possibly showing the Cook Strait and Malborough Sounds from the inter-island ferry. There are several views of an unidentified bay, possibly Days Bay, Eastbourne. Two slides of geothermal activity, Wairekei, Taupo District. Miscellaneous images show an unidentified woman, sitting on the bonnet of a Volkswagen motorcar, and standing on volcanic rock formations at an unidentified ocean bay. Description: Transparency slides of shipping on the Whanganui River and in Wellington Harbour, taken ca 1950s-1950s, by Mrs M E Crane of Wanganui. A number of the vessels are identified. Source of descriptive information - Creator's name and date taken from original boxes, all of which were labelled 'Ships [or Shipping] 1.6.62' and one included the name and address 'Mrs M E Crane, c/- M.O.W., Box 423, Wanganui, NZ'. According to the donor, the photographer was the mother of a friend of his, but he did not know her name. He knew that she worked for the Waterfront Industry Commission in Wanganui. Quantity: 82 colour original transparency/ies slides. Physical Description: Dye coupler slides, 35mm Provenance: The slides had belonged to the mother of a friend of the donor's. The name Mrs M E Crane was taken from one of the original transparency processing boxes. The donor knew that the creator of the collection had worked for Waterfront Industry Commission in Wanganui.
