Description: Scenic photographs of New Zealand taken by R.H. Bartlett, photographer who was working in Auckland circa 1875 to 1880. At the beginning of the album there is a fold-out page, opening into four full-sized photographs. Most of the images are of North Island scenes, including some of Maori groups outside whare, meeting houses, and a school with thatched walls and roof, and a view of the Maori pa at Ohinemutu. Most of the other views are landscapes, including the Pink and White Terraces, the Whangarei and Waitakere waterfalls; and hot springs at Lake Rotomahana, the Champagne Fountain at Wairakei, and the Crows Nest geyser at Taupo. The South Island scenes are all around Milford Sound, with views of Mount Pembroke, Harrison Cove, and Mitre Peak. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Quantity: 1 album(s). Description: Photographs and postcards relating to Mary Helen Pugh (nee Ensor) when she nursed at Rotorua 1942 to 1943. Taken by unidentified photographers. Most prints inscribed on reverse, apparently by Mary Helen. - One set of prints show views of nurses with babies at a nursery. Also views of a group of nurses posing at a kitchen afternoon tea for a nursing sister, and two nurses at the gate to their home 'Casaloma' at 106 Arawa Street, Rotorua. Nurses include Sister Elwood with baby Yoko, B Holland with baby Elizabeth Cooper (at 3 months), E Mitchell with baby B Whatu (premature), Olive Bell, Sister Ford, and Ray McIntosh. - One set of prints show views of Ohinemutu; an interior view of St Faith's Church, a carved figure with a bell, tekoteko figure, carved doorway, and the refurbished Tamatekapua meeting house circa 1943. Also includes a pakeha woman standing underneath a carved gateway, and Guide Tiki (Dick) Papakura. - One set of prints show scenic views taken during cycling and recreational trips including: trees on Hongi's Track, Lake Rotomahana, Tarawera, Lake Rotokawa, Mokia Island on Lake Rotorua, the Green and Blue Lakes, Rainbow Rapids on Waikato River, various geothermal attractions at Orakei Korako, the Wishing Well, Aladdins Cave, Golden Fleece Terrace, Devils Throat, and Artist's Palette. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Martin album

Description: According to the inscription inside the front cover (by an unidentified person), the date is firmly established as 1884, however the album has a number of photographs of the Tarawera area, both before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. These include views of the White Terraces, one of which has a group of Maori cooking food in the hot pools; a carved house at Te Wairoa, showing interior and exterior before the eruption, and the exterior afterwards; a group of Maori at Te Ariki (one of the places most devastated in the eruption with the loss of many lives. This image has the inscription `Natives of te Ariki first to be killed by eruption'); views of Mount Tarawera covered in mud and ash; and the Old Mill, destroyed in the eruption. Many of the images have the signature initials J.M. (Josiah Martin), and a few have the initials F.A.C (Frank Arnold Coxhead) who may have taken them, but which may just have been printed by him. The last few views are in Tasmania, including Burnie - Emu Bay, and the Guide Falls, near Burnie. Inscriptions: Album page - `Ex libris Brent Gration-Maxfield. 1967'; Album page - `New Zealand. 1884. An early series of 46 4to sepia photographs of New Zealand views. The date, 1884, is firmly established by the letter opposite [attached to album page. Unsigned and undated], which refers to both the album and G.A.
