Description: Consists of 3 logs written by Mackay on the whaling ship Splendid for the years 1875-1877. The logs detail the voyages of the ship from Port Chalmers to various places around New Zealand, the Southern Ocean and into the Pacific. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid. Description: The log contains an account of the voyage of the Vigilant which left London in Oct 1831, rounded the Cape of Good Hope and headed for Indonesia. Calls were made at Timor (Mar-Jun 1832) and Ternate (Jul-Aug). The Vigilant then sailed north to New Guinea, whaled in New Ireland waters (Sep-Dec) and continued to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand (21 Feb-23 Mar 1833). Subsequent calls were made at Tongatapu, Tonga (29 Jun-5 Jul), Tutuila, Samoa (10-12 Jul), Bay of Islands (14-30 Oct; 30 Jan-4 Feb 1834), Norfolk Island (20-21 Feb), Bay of Islands (31 Mar-30 Apr), `Eua, Tonga (30 -31 May), Vava'u, Tonga (15-22 Jun), Manu'a, Samoa (25-27 Juun, 7-11 Sep), Savai'i, Samoa (2-4 Sep), Sydney (19 Oct-24 Nov), Bay of Islands (28 Feb-18 Mar 1835). Description: The letter is written at the Bay of Islands and describes the stay of the whaling ship Noyelle was on while it was at the Chatham Islands. There they had `very bad luck' and were attacked by the Chatham Islanders while a French whaling ship was completely destroyed. An accompanying French Man of War captured some islanders, intending to take them to France. The whaling is described as being reasonably successful. A transcription is available. Description: Shows a view from Doubtless Bay, looking into the entrance to Mangonui Harbour. At right is the former site of Rangikapiti Pa, with Captain William Butler's signal mast on top of it. In the harbour entrance are about a dozen ships, probably associated with the whaling station at Mangonui.
