Description: Colour transparency slides of Auckland scenes, taken ca mid to late 1950s and 1960s by Peter Vaizey Conley. This set is chiefly of Waitemata Harbour, Auckland waterfront between Westhaven Marina and Mechanics Bay, and a few views of the city. Waterfront and harbour views include two images of Auckland Harbour Bridge and views of ships include the Mariposa and the Oriana, and [Devonport?] ferry. Views of city buildings include Auckland Railway Station and Ferry Terminal Building. Landscape views show beaches, including Long Bay, one view of a waterfall near Papakura, and a landscaped [public?] garden, probably Point Erin Park. Description: Norman Livingston was born in Nelson in 1898. Describes his family background, his education and career in engineering. Talks about working for exams at the Bowers Engineering School in Wellington and his jobs with New Zealand Railways and Union Steam Ship Company (USSCo). Recalls in detail his work at the Onekaka Iron Works, working in Australia during the Depression, at the Collingwood dairy factory and the cement plant at Tarakohe. Talks about hobbies including deerstalking and writing. Susan Livingston was born in Westport in 1902. Describes in detail the Gooding and Marshall families, life at Parkeston, local inhabitants, Westhaven in the 1900s, Paturau Valley and her father's work as a coal miner for the Prouse and Saunders flax mill. Recalls the native forest and birds, gathering wild food about 1910 and Joe Malone and a Maori midden. Describes transport by horse in Golden Bay in the 1900s and the social life around Collingwood at the time. Describes boarding houses and hotels which her parents kept over many years including Goodings Boarding House at Parkeston, the Wakatu Hotel and Rising Sun Hotel at Nelson and the Golden Eagle Hotel at Greymouth. Describes the Collingwood-Mangarakau coach and the Taitapu goldfields. Gives a very detailed description of Mangarakau School and its pupils in the 1900s. Talks about dances, the code of behaviour, drinking and smoking, her parents' trust and men's attitudes towards women. Describes her nursing training at St. Helen's in Christchurch, midwifery, training in Wellington and nursing at Kaponga in Taranaki and in Nelson. Recalls meeting her husband. Briefly describes her admiration of Rewi Alley and her political views. Description: Jock Spence was born in Marton on 20 December 1910. Talks about his parents migrating from Wales to Marton and then Mapua and Harakeke where his father ran an apple orchard. Describes the family's move to Nelson in 1920 where his father worked as a joiner for Webley Brothers. Recalls the various schools that he attended with special reference to Nelson Central School and Nelson College. Describes leaving school and working as an office and store boy before joining the Publics Works Department in 1927. Explains his work as an engineering survey linesman, or chainman, building roads across Nelson and Golden Bay. Talks at length about the construction of the Westhaven Dry Road which was built by hand labour. Outlines the number of men working, problems of the work and the time it took. Talks about his marriage and living in a public works camp on the Takaka Hill. Recalls the births of his children. Talks about public works policy during the Depression and being laid off in 1932 when Public Works money ran out. Talks about the Depression, health and nutrition and family expenditure. Describes returning to this work in 1934. Talks about Keith Holyoake, Bob Semple and Uncle Scrim. Describes Puponga locals in 1935, Captain Sonny Tregidga and finding Maori artefacts. Talks about work on the Cobb Hydro scheme , the Sounds Defence Scheme during World War II and work after the war.
