Description: Opens with views of the site of the Arapuni Hydro scheme and the Paturuahine Gorge which was flooded to form Lake Arapuni. This is followed by images of the repairs to the one of the water channels that took place in 1932. The rest are photographs of the dam at various stages of construction, the dam completed, views of the new lake, water flowing over the spillway, and the Arapuni falls created below the dam Two views of Atiamuri show the Pohaturoa Rock in the background Ten images of Stewart's Claim, a location south of Okarito, show scenic views some with gold dredging equipment lying around, a beach and a river estuary on which is a barge loaded with pipes. Eight images record before and after effects of controlled blasting on a limestone bluff at Cobden Quarry, Greymouth, photographed on the 15th of January, 1932 The last section are views of the construction of the Waitaki Hydro, and the new Lake Waitaki. Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Photographs relating to the dance band scene in New Zealand in the 1930s and 1940s, largely associated with Lauri Paddi (aka Laurence George Malvern Paddy] and various bands. Many of the images are signed by musicians in the bands, not all the signatures being legible. Names have been listed where possible. Musicians with signatures Ian H Pitcaithly, W O Pritchard, and Jeffrey Madden, are probably the same as musicians listed on a poster for the Auckland Peter Pan Orchestra (Nin Pitcaithly, Billy Pritchardt, and Johnny Madden). One series of photographs shows musicians performing with Lauri Paddi going on tour in the South Island, including two views taken from a car, following a train on the road/rail Rakaia Bridge. Description: Scrap book of miscellaneous photographs, many of which have no captions and have not been identified. At the front of the album is an undated newspaper cutting showing the original building used for the Colonial Museum in 1865, which `has been revealed by the pulling down of the Dominion Museum, at the back of Parliament House. For many years this building has been used for a variety of purposes, museum exhibits being housed in adjacent quarters, but it is about to be demolished'. The first group show interior scenes of the Canterbury Museum, with exhibits of bird skeletons, and mounted birds. Other scenes show mounted animals, possibly not in Canterbury. Scenery includes views of the Franz Josef Glacier; and a number which are identified showing the gold-mining area around Ross and Donoghues, the Totara River and Mikonui River. One page has six photographs of mountainous regions in Switzerland; several show the area near the Wellington caves in Queensland, Australia; and two views show the breaking of the Cook Strait Cable. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1901 and 1903. South Island subjects include the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and quarry, Westport railway yards and wharf, Reefton, and scenes of explosions in Lyttelton Harbour for Regatta Day, 1st January 1909, and a large number of people beside the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade building. Scenes show the laying of foundation stones for the Petone Waterworks, and for the Baptist Church in Petone, both in 1903. There is also a view of the lecturn for St Augustine's Church in Petone, which was made by the Petone Railway Workshops. Several photographs show the Kelburn Cable Car, the cable car tunnel and the engine room, in 1903. Two photographs of a group of school children, the girls wearing white pinafores over dark coloured dresses. Some photographs relate to New Zealand railways, including specific locomotives, the Rimutaka Incline with the middle rail (part of the Fell System), railway tunnels, bush railways and railway workshops and yards; and some relate to Godber's interest and work in fire fighting. Description: Photographs taken circa 1880s by James Ring, photographer based in Greymouth. Scenes in Greymouth and nearby include views of severe flooding (p 3-5, 7); loading ships at the wharf showing hydraulic cranes raising hoppers of coal, and rolling stock laden with coal for transportation. Three shipping photographs including the SS Gerda wrecked on the Greymouth Breakwater in June 1888; the SS Mawhera ashore on North Beach, Greymouth in 1886, and the SS Rosamond crossing the Greymouth Bar. Beyond Greymouth views include the Grey River, Rocky Island, Brunnerton and the Brunnerton Bridge, and the West Coast Road. Then views of Lake Brunner, Refuge Island and Mitchell Falls. The Teremakau [now Taramakau] River is next, one view showing the road bridge, and one showing the flying fox (wire bridge) leading over to the Teremakau Hotel. These are followed by scenes along the Otira Gorge, including Warnock's Nob, Westley's Creek (Wesley Creek), and Starvation Point, before reaching Porter's Pass, Broken River, Arthur's Pass and the Devil's Punch Bowl Falls. Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River.
