Description: Gives much political and social gossip of Wellington, describes sheep runs in Hawke's Bay and the Wairarapa, as well as his trips to Christchurch, Auckland, Parewanui and Wanganui Source of title - Transcribed Illingworth came to New Zealand with H J Kennard who was representing Kennard Brothers in negotiations with the Wellington Provincial Council over the patent slip at Evans Bay; he made brief trips to Auckland and Christchurch and in Dec 1866 was present at the Manawatu purchase meeting at Parewanui Pa, after which he visited Wanganui and travelled by canoe on the Wanganui River. Shows groups of figures on foreshore including man on horseback, man examining ships through spyglass, two small groups of Maori watching, two men smoking long pipes, 14 sailing ships including one rounding Point Halswell, Somes Island with flag flying at its southern end, two Maori craft including one with sails. View extends from Warepori's Village in Pitone at left, to Mount Victoria at right. Features named are: Warepori's village Pitone, Valley of the Hutt, Tararua Mountains, Somes's Island, Pt Halswell (the entrance from the sea), Pt Jerningham, Mr Duppa's house (Oriental Bay), Mount Victoria. Description: The papers consist of a volume containing transcriptions of letters written by (Eliza?) Hargreaves and (apparently) Sarah Falwasser, passengers on the Bolton, 1839-1840. The letters are addressed to Mrs Calender and Miss C and describe the voyage out and life in Port Nicholson during the first half of 1840 and observations of Maori life and customs. The volume also contains newspapers clippings about Rev J F Churton and his family. Also included is a number of newspaper clippings, a race card from the 1851 Auckland races, Dora Churton's dance card and a copies of letters relating to provenance. Source of title - Supplied title Accompanying material - Accompanied by copies of letters relating to provenance Rev John Frederick Churton was incumbent of the parish of Threapwood at Wrexham immediately prior to his emigration. Eliza Hargreaves and Sarah Falwasser were also from Wrexham. Presumably the Calenders were Wrexham residents who compiled this collection about their emigrant friends. Description: Maori correspondence mostly from the Whanganui district relating tribal activities, affairs and matters relating to land. Includes lists of names for Maori living at Parewanui; report from a meeting between Governor Grey, Major Kemp (Te Ranghiwinui), and various hapu from Whanganui; a letter about Epiha Patapu, native policeman from Whanganui who gave an oath of allegience to the Queen. Also includes letter from Wikitoa Taringakuri (aka Te Kaeaea) offering to sell large amounts of land in Wellington because of his extreme age and inability to collect the rents of his properties. Description: Various letters from Maori to White regarding Maori land interests, monies, and claims. Also includes a list of names for Ngati Te Ata (Waikato) for 1862. Includes a letter from Te Poria of Ngati Raukawa to Grey pleading for a reduced sentence for his sons, Makaora & Waiata, who were accused of rape and sentenced to two years; also includes supporting letter from senior contemporary chiefs of Ngati Raukawa to Grey concerned that the accused mens legal rights were abused and that a presumption of guilt presided over their hearing.
