Description: Shows a view of slopes on Somes Island, with fencing and pine trees. The sloping hills converge at a lighthouse at the south end of the island, and beyond is the Wellington City coastline, with Wellington Heads and the Pencarrow Coast in the distance. Monogram signature at lower left may be C.A. or G.A. Floral watercolour study on verso, with note: Deutsch die Saar (The Saar is German). The Saar was reunited with Germany after a plebiscite in 1935. A large number of Jews were deported from Baden and the Saar in 1940. Probably painted by a German internee on Somes Island during the Second World War.
