Description: Aerial view of the Wellington Public Hospital complex at Newtown. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer in May 1969. This photograph was taken specifically to show the site being cleared for a new eleven storied clinical services block which was completed in 1974. Three of the original hospital's wards opened in 1881 were cleared to provide the site for the new building. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s) single image on 35mm negative strip.

Description: Steep partially-cleared hills behind a row of single-storied houses, three larger, three very small. A large fenced vegetable growing area in front, with a path winding through the centre. The scene could be in the Hutt Valley or Wellington, but bears a strong resemblance to Richard Taylor's ink & wash drawing titled 'Wanganui Hospital & Mr Nixon's house, Nov. 27 1857' (E-296-q-146-3) A view of Wellington Harbour is on the verso of this page. One of them realises that it is 'English housing'. Refers to Pete Hodgson's determination to keep the Bill English housing embarrassment on the agenda. Bill English was claiming nearly $1000 a week to live in his family house in Wellington in spite of fact that the English's family trust owns the $1.2 million house in Karori; he claims his real home is in Dipton.
