Description: Two photographs of a Maori picnic at Pigeon Bush on the occasion of the settlement of the ownership of Lake Wairarapa. The first shows a large crowd of men, women and children with Seddon on the right in front of a two-storey wooden house. The second is of the crowd under the trees, one with a concertina, and three men holding up eels they had caught. A photograph of Members of Parliament in the debating chamber. The names given are: Symes, O'Maara, A L D Fraser, J Palmer, Hall, Field, Witheford, Wi Pere, Bennet, Kaihu, Duncan, MIlls, Ward, Cairncross, Stevens, Hogg, F M Smith, Carroll, McGowan and Hall-Jones. A photograph of the opening by Seddon of the Ballance Bridge described as "over Mangahau". It was taken by P De Loree & Son a photographer based in Pahiatua which may indicate the approximate location. The crowd in the foreground is mostly of children and the bridge has been decorated with plants. A photograph of Seddon, Mrs Hogg and Alexander Wilson Hogg opening a bridge. It is captioned at the bottom left "Mangainoka 4.3.1896" but this location has not been identified and the name on the reverse is illegible. Description: New Zealand colonial treasurer Joe Ward is seen returning from the United Kingdom with a large suitcase containing the loan, while the Opposition members of parliament look on in consternation. Extended Title - The mission to England has been productive of wonderful results, notwithstanding the shadowing of the Opposition detective, and the persistent efforts of the Opposition leaders to damage the credit of the colony in London, and there is grief in the Tory camp. The Million and a Half Loan has been subscribed four-fold, and New Zealand securities were never so high in London. 'Don't you think, Mr Evening Roast', suggests the little doctor, 'that you have overdone those articles of yours. Have they not been too malignant - too vindictive? Contains various scenes illustrating Maori life at Tuahiwi, and the powhiri welcoming Governor General Plunket and Lady Plunket (27 April 1905). Plunket series also covers Kaiapoi receptions at Borough Council Chamber and Oddfellows Hall. Other named figures include Wiremu Te Kakakura Parata, Mrs Rotangi, Chief Pohipi outside his Ashley dwelling, Manihi and his wife, and George Leech. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903.
