Description: Shows two huts beside and end of the lake, one with a group of six Maori (probably three men and three women) five of them seated, in front of it. At the entrance way to the other a hut man is about to enter carrying a flat bowl with steam rising from it. In the centre foreground is a three?-legged cauldron. In the lake water at right a figure stands at the back of a canoe. There is a grassy island in the lake and beyond is flat-rolling land partly covered with bush. Description: Translation entitled - The Church of the Seven Rules of Jehovah. Founder of the church was Simon Patete and it was established in the Wairarapa ca 1895. First Wairarapa leader was Taiawhio Te Tau. Doctrine taught that the Seventh Rule of Jehovah had Maori prestige, scriptural authority and European influence. Description: Information sheet printed on both sides. One side relates to Maori canoes - tree-felling, hollowing out. Shows a mokihi or raft, a river canoe, war canoe and fishing canoe as well as a canoe bailer. Shows a reproduction of a picture of canoes at Gisborne in 1836, by Joel Samuel Polack. The other side shows scenes of Maori warfare and weaponry, reproductions of pictures of war canoes, a haka, patu and other weapons (includes George French Angas' "Weapons and implements of war ; warriors preparing for a fight" 1847; his "War dance before the Pah of Oinemutu, near Rotorua Lake"; and J I McDonald's [Alarm in a Maori pa] 1906); a photograph of a model of a pa in the Dominion Museum, and a picture of the earthworks at Gate Pa. Description: Electronic transcription of Thomas Laslett's New Zealand journal (4) by Meri Low with support from Dr Neville Ritchie and David Wilton. The transcription was commissioned by the Department of Conservation and completed in September 2014. This transcribed journal was one of three journals re-written by Laslett in 1878-1881 from his original diaries from his four visits to New Zealand in 1833-1834, 1837-1838, 1839-1841, 1841-1843. The journals contain original drawings from the original diaries. On his first voyage, Laslett was carpenter on the HMS Buffalo assisting the Surveyors. And was Timber Inspector for the Admiralty on the HMS Buffalo for three voyages and the HMS Tortoise for the last. The journals contain full descriptions of the ship parties' activities, including descriptions of places, Maori villages, Maori practices, disputes between Maori and between Maori and the ship's party, timber collecting practices including employment of Maori labour, problems between crew and officers, European population, and descriptions of flora.
