Three Transatlantic crossings between Liverpool, Glasgow, and New York, August-November 1918. Liverpool, England, to Port Chalmers, with returned New Zealand soldiers. Left Liverpool 2 December 1918, called at Colon (18-19 December 1918), Panama Canal and Balboa (19 December 1918), Auckland (9 January 1919), Wellington (11-15 January 1919), arrived Port Chalmers 16 January 1919. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by various photographers, circa early 1880s. Images include several Maori groups, Maori kainga, meeting houses, carving; a large number of views of mud pools, geysers, hot springs, and in particular views of the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Other views show areas of the South Island, including Dunedin City, Oamaru, Christchurch; and the North island including Auckland, Thames District (a number showing aspects of gold mining in the area). Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar.
