Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: The papers largely consist of correspondence spanning four decades between Jane Oates and her sister, Margaret Morten, who lived in Derbyshire, England, but include letters written by Samuel, John Morten (husband of Margaret), various children of the Oates and Morten families, and by various other family friends and relatives. Letters give details about family matters, the concerns of stock and crop farming, adverse weather conditions, etc both in New Zealand and rural England. The collection includes photocopy of passenger contract ticket for and photograph of Jane Oates and children on their departure for New Zealand, as well as genealogical material, and a letter written by Watters to her family in New Zealand when she was visiting the family home and relatives at Monyash, England in 1955 Source of title - Supplied by Library Other - See MS-Papers-8236 for further letters from the Oates family in New Zealand to their family in England Accompanying material - Accompanied by copies of photographs (originals in Photographic Archive) and material relating to the Rev. Description: Drawn on a base map of Owahanga Station, the annotations depict pā sites, (including terraced pā), middens (deposits of shells or animal bones indicating human settlement) and pits along the Mataikona River. Several comments are written on the map such as the bulldozing of sites, pit size, locality of farm buildings. Drawn by P.J.P. Base map: 'Owahanga Station' (ms map?, 1964). Surveyed by R G Lockie. This map names paddocks, buildings, and describes land use. Gives topographical information. Includes enlargement of the layout of the station's farm buildings such as wool shed, cook house, and shearing quarters. Map consists of two sheets glued together. Description: Topographic map of the southern half of the North Island, with especial emphasis on the Wairarapa valley, showing natural features and stands of timber; the Maori names for some of these features are given, together with names and locations of some pa . Includes the surveyors' route which began on 1st. June, ca. 1848, from a site along the Manawatu River to the Ruamahanga River, Lake Wairarapa, ending at the Hutt River on 20 June. Description: Sketch plan of a subdivision for Mr Perry of part of Penrose Estate, located on the Taratahi Plain Block (8), Tiffen Survey District, immediately south of Masterton. Shows the Waingawa River, southwest to East Taratahi Road, and five surveyed sections between these points, of between 123 and 140 acres each. Sections are numbered in pencil from 1 to 5, and priced between 12 and 15 pounds. Shows terrace on section one and the Penrose homestead on adjacent property. Shows several unnamed roads on the circumference of the properties, unnamed, that are probably State Highway 2 (Main Road), Hughes Line and Cornwall Road. Pencilled note on map: 'Will sell the block sec 1.2.3.4.5 @ £13 all round'. Pencil annotations on map such as calculations. Map originally drawn in pencil, then mostly inked, but process not finished.
