Description: A view of the Waikato River in the distance, with a dirt road in the centre foreground. Three men sit or stand on the road, and beyond them in the middle distance is a group of tents on the flat. Copied by Hamley from the drawings of his superior officer, E. A. Williams. The original Williams watercolour of the same title is held at the Hocken Library - (slide at ATL). Williams' original watercolour was made in 1864. Description: View from across the Waikato River towards a steep hill with steps cut out of the riverside slope. The fence of a redoubt can be seen on top, with a gun to one side. A horse is being transported on a raft on the river, and another is carrying a load along the bank, led by a soldier. Probably copied from a watercolour by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams, although the exact model is not known. A closer view by Williams, 'Whangamarino, 12 March 1864' is in the Turnbull at E-249-050. Whangamarino Redoubt was constructed in 1863 and the wooden palisade was removed during 1864 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Taupiri Mountain in the background, with the riverbank to the left and houses in the distance at the foot of the mountain. Copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, now in the Hocken Library in E. A. Williams' Notebook, p. 37. The Turnbull has a slide of this work (under the same title as Hamley's). A different view of Taupiri by Williams (Turnbull reference E-349-053/054) is dated 13 March 1864, hence the suggested date in the title Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Looking across the river towards the stockade atop a hill, a flag flying inside its perimeter fence. There is a shed, possibly a boat shed at the water's edge and a small boat with a sail is being rowed across the river. A cleared hill with tree-stumps is on the left Copied by Hamley from the drawings of his superior officer, E. A. Williams. The original drawing on which this was based is in the Hocken Library Pictures Collection in E. A. Williams' Album, p. 21, with the same title. The Library has a photograph of the E. A. Williams' sketch, negative 115988 1/2. Physical Description: Watercolour on grey paper, 93 x 190 mm
