Description: Describes movements around Sydney, Auckland, Fiji (1861-1862), and participation in the Pukorokoro River blockade (1863). Important episode at Fiji, 27 Jul 1862, having recently arrived at Levuka, Captain Jenkins summoned the chiefs "to a formal meeting on board the Miranda for the purpose of conveying to them the decision of H.M. Ministers not to accept the sovereignty of the Fiji Islands, in terms drawn up by His Excellency Sir John Young". Includes text of declaration in English and Fijian. The Miranda stayed at Levuka most of Jul and Aug; entertained King Thankombau; description of Levuka. Wreck of the `Orpheus' described, Feb 1863. Mainly short log entries but 1863 in some detail; summaries for 1861, 1862 included. Description: Military map showing operations from the Auckland Fort Britomart Albert barracks, south along the military route to Cambridge, Aratitaha and Tokanui, Waikato District. Depicts military blockhouses, redoubts and forts (five in the Waikato region and over eleven in South Auckland), stockages, routes used on garrison duty only, engagements, Maori pa and kainga and the confiscation boundary as gazetted 17/12/1864 including the aukati (frontier) line. Also shows mission stations Waipa and Taupiri and geographical features, most with Maori placenames. Identifies battle sites at several places including Hairini (22.2.64), Rangiaohia (21.2.64) Kihikihi and Orakau (2.4.64), Waiari (11.2.64) and in South Auckland including Hills Clearing (8.9.63), Koheroa (17.7.63), Meremere (1.11.63). Several Maori pa and kainga are named, including Tokanui, Te Kopua, Otawhao, Otautahanga. In the Waikato regions a similar number of both redoubts and pa sites are identified. Description: British infantry and cavalry on the march on a road cleared through dense bush The image is a reworking of the Illustrated London News image published in 1863. It may have been prepared as a book illustration. It appears to be a proof copy and is on a blank sheet with no surrounding text and is markedly smaller than the Illustrated London News version, which is 160 x 235 mm. Another copy of the I. L. N. version is held in E-372-f-003-2. The image was formerly catalogued by the Library as Troops passing through wooden country along the Great South Road; also as Shepherd Bush. The derivation from the Illustrated London News was not recognised. Other Titles - Former titles - Troops passing through wooded country along the Great South Road. Bombay near Sheppard's Bush redoubt where Government troops were ambushed by Maoris on 17 July 1863. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'.
