A fort is enclosed within a fence on the right, and the church on the left is surrounded by other buildings with puffs of smoke, either from fires or shot. Description: Scene in a military camp, with soldiers making high circular wickerwork baskets in the foreground. A cavalryman in on horseback in the centre. Tents and low barracks are in the background. Compare the right side of a similar sketch in the Hocken Library by E. A. Williams, Hamley's superior officer 'Siege train on Pukerimu Flats, Waikato, 1864. Soldiers making gabions'. The sketch is p. 15 of Williams' sketchbook, now disbound and separately mounted. Description: Shows camp in a flat basin, with horse exercise yard and flagpole in left foreground, and other square fenced yards further off. In the middle distance are the main barracks, and scattered buildings of a small town behind. The Waipa River may be visible at left before it flows behind central rise separating the foreground from the background. Pirongia Mountain may be the hill at right, although Pirongia Mountain is twin-coned. Artist attributed on grounds of style. The work was attributed to Williams prior to its acquisition. It is also stylistically similar to the work of Henry James Warre; however Warre is not known to have been in Pirongia. He was based in Taranaki. Alexandra is the old name for Pirongia. Members of the 2nd Waikato Regiment built a strong redoubt on a hill at the west side of the town, in about 1864. The long low building in the left background is the Alexandra West Redoubt, while the set of buildings on a low hill in the centre background is the Alexandra East Redoubt. Warre Inscriptions: Unsigned and undated.; Verso - centre - [Title] The Library has a black and white copy of the painting at A-113-002, showing it before it was as faded as it now is and while it was in the possession of Mr Lennard. Provenance: Previously sold at Webb's auction, Auckland, March 1981. The Library has coloured photographs from this period showing the watercolour as quite faded. An earlier owner was Mr L. M. Lennard of Auckland.

Description: Looking across the river towards the stockade atop a hill, a flag flying inside its perimeter fence. There is a shed, possibly a boat shed at the water's edge and a small boat with a sail is being rowed across the river. A cleared hill with tree-stumps is on the left Copied by Hamley from the drawings of his superior officer, E. A. Williams. The original drawing on which this was based is in the Hocken Library Pictures Collection in E. A. Williams' Album, p. 21, with the same title. The Library has a photograph of the E. A. Description: Rear-wheel paddle steamer Koheroa discharging troops from the Waikato River to the landing at Pukerimu during the Waikato War. There are military tents, huts and men on horseback and the land. Description: Two soldiers, one standing, one on horseback, gazing in the direction of a large wooden-fenced fort on the right of the Mangapiko Stream, with the palisades of the opposing Maori pa just visible on the brow of a hill in the distance. There is a low bridge across the creek, with a road leading up the right bank towards the fort. Probably copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. Description: Shows Auckland Harbour with HMS Esk to the left, flying blue and white pennants. In the centre, with no sails, is the prison hulk Marion, with figures lining the deck. There is a string of pennants along part of the ship's length, and a blue naval flag hangs from one mast. In front beside the ship is a small boat with red sail. At right distance is a steamer and three sailing vessels. On top of hill at left is a signal tower, with red flag flying.
