Description: On the left, a plan view of a fortified pa at Golden Bay. Rougly rectangular in shape, it is shown on a hilltop with a double palisade and two entrances. On the right is a side view of 'Section of walls near a gateway', showing a man crouched in a trench between two palisades, aiming a rifle through the base of the outer palisade. A lengthy note below explains the method of building palisades The image of 'Section of walls near a gateway' may refer to the pa at Massacre (Golden) Bay, or may refer to an associated lithograph by Heaphy Earthworks at Rangiriri, Waikato, 1863 (Copy held at B-043-016-5-1, or B-043-015-5-1). The note refers to the palisade protecting against shells or cannonballs, likely to be used by English troops, and not known to be in use against any pa in the Golden Bay area. However the Golden Bay pa shown appears to be a fully defensive one and is completely enclosed with a double palisade, offset entranceways, and a watch-tower Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - on backing sheet in pencil. Description: Photograph of a watercolour (or possibly an ink and wash sketch) by G. F. von Tempsky. The location of the original watercolour is not known. Another copy of this photograph is held by descendants of the artist in Hawaii. Shows four soldiers and one Maori in the foreground, firing towards a Maori fortification on a hill in the background. A letter from the artist to Thomas Russell, Minister for Colonial Defence on 11 February 1864 probably refers to this sketch. See G. The drawing is inaccurate in that the Pioneer was a paddlesteamer, and the paddle is not shown here. In fact it actually shows the "Corio" steamer. Description: Battle scene with groups of soldiers from the Forest Rangers and the 65th Regiment, plus General Cameron and staff, with guns firing and horses, several dead or wounded men, Maori whares in the background and bush and hills. Soldiers are identified by name and the death of General Nixon is shown. The man directing the Forest Rangers is likely to be von Tempsky. After an original by J.A.Wilson, a witness to the battle, and depicted in this view. A copy of the original and a description of the battle is published in Cowan, J. The New Zealand wars. Vol. 1 p. 345. Lieutenant McDonnell is likely to be Thomas McDonnell (1832-1899), noted for his heroism at Rangiaowhia. His brother, William McDonnell (1839-1919?) also fought in the New Zealand wars, but in the Wanganui area. Taken from the site of the central redoubt of Rangiriri Pa (intersected by the Great South Road), showing the long parapet and double ditch extending westward from the hilltop to the Waikato River. Other - Same image also held at the Historic Places Trust, along with several others of the area believed to have been taken in the 1920s. The Trust's photographs came from the Department of Lands and Survey. Description: Shows the tents of Te Papa military camp to the right and the buildings of Tauranga in the distance on the right. The church-like building with a spire on the right was the Church Missionary Society's Mission Institute, taken over as a commissariat by the troops. A low cliff drops to the water and there are several small boats in the harbour. The view is from the west side of Tauranga Harbour. The Mission Institute was erected in 1860 as a training school to teach Maori agricultural skills. After being used as a commissariat during the war, it was used as a hospital.
