Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Album chiefly shows members of a Lands & Survey team surveying boundaries etc, in the Chatham Islands, and in South Canterbury, circa 1938. Residents of the Chatham Islands, various locations in the islands and activities such as sheep transportation from the islands to Lyttelton and Wellington by ship are shown. Another sequence shows drainage and irrigation procedures in South Canterbury. The photographer is probably Russell Gladstone Dick, later the New Zealand Surveyor-General. Other - Source of descriptive information - Card inserted in album which reads "Ample evidence this is a 1938 Lands and Surveys team surveying boundaries etc ... Of interest are a number of views of the ruins of a house, with only the chimneys standing; several of the new St John's Church, Hororata, including laying the foundations, building construction, and the completed church with lychgate; one of the tombstones of Sir John Hall, and his wife, with the new St John's Church partially visible in the background (for which Sir John Hall bequeathed the money); and one photograph of a steam tractor fording a river with difficulty, with a tow-rope leading to three laden wagons on the far side of the river. Description: Photographs of Clarke, Graham and Fyfe who first climbed Mount Cook on Christmas Day 1894, with their mountaineering equipment; the sheep dog of James MacKenzie the sheep-stealer; a bullock team pulling wool bales; the Fairlie to Mount Cook coach with John Rutherford driving; the bridge over the river at Lake Tekapo with the hotel next to it; Mount Cook Station, originally built by A Burnett, with a thatched roof and the family outside it; a drawing of the ferry crossing Lake Pukaki and the original accommodation house on the shore; hay-making in front of the Balmoral homestead; the yard of Haldon station surrounded by trees showing the out-buildings and men with dogs; Levels homestead with a man with a hoe and others outside; and a group of men and women picnicking in front of two tents at Governor's Bush in Mount Cook township being the first party conveyed by the Mount Cook Motor Company ca 1880s. Description: Lived in Ashburton 1915-2008. Backgrounds parents Arthur Osborn Lochhead and Kathleen Alma Lochhead (nee Ruddenklau) who ran a mixed farm at Mount Somers. Recalls leaving farm at ten years to come to Methven when his father went shearing. After leaving school worked at Hobbs seed cleaning store. Details sewing bags on tin mill and poisoning rabbits while working at Rangaitata Island farm for Frank Ruddenklau, his uncle. Says he then drove tractor and plough at Springfield estate farm for his grandfather Frederick Ruddenklau. Refers to being held back from World war Two service for 12 months because he was head sewer on the header. Says he left in 1941 from Wellington on board the Aquitania after three months training as a driver at Trentham. Refers to his three brothers going to war. Describes voyage via Fremantle, South Africa, the Red Sea to arrive at Port Tewfik, Egypt. Talks about training at Maadi Camp to be in 6 RMT (Reserve Mechanical Transport). Discusses transport of petrol and water and conditions in the desert, food, snakes, flies, clearing mine fields. Refers to taking 26th Battalion to Sidi Rezegh. Mentions brother George Lochhead in battle of Sidi Rezegh, being taken prisoner of war and getting the Victoria Cross medal. Talks about being present at El Alamein battle, everything bursting into fire at night, and being at Tobruk. Brief mention of Battle of Minqar Qaim, and a bullet through his radiator. Describes drinking sprees in Cairo, the Club, sightseeing at Pyramids and Nile River, Aswad Dam, hiring gharries. Talks about Methven and Districts reunion dinner in Cairo. Refers to getting pneumonia and having to go to Alexandria Hospital, then going to Palestine to recuperate. Says the whole DIV (2nd NZEF) went to Aleppo, Syria for six weeks working with refugees and road making. Mentions meeting Bedouins in the desert. Describes returning to Mersa Matruh with 23rd Battalion on board. Discusses mail and food parcels from home. Mentions role of Major Hood, the commander. Talks about driving at night time over the Apennines mountain range in Italy where the 6 RMT broke up. Talks about working in Mobile ambulance company on Italian front during winter. Says took wounded from the field and from the Casualty Clearing station and RAP, and took locals to Italian hospitals. Mentions Methven local nurse Natalie Currie bringing wounded. Talks about being based in Forli, sleeping in his ambulance and mortar bombs hitting it. Recalls General Freyberg visiting the 6 RMT and Winston Churchill coming on parade. Talks about playing cards, rugby, trying Italian wine. Had leave in Florence. Says sent pay home for his family. Talks about going to Trieste and being in Udine when the war ended. Describes hitch hiking via Milan, Genoa, Turin, Lake Como to Bari. Expands on trip on the 'Georgic' to Maadi Camp, Egypt, and on the 'Strathaird' passenger liner home. Says post war he worked at Mid Canterbury transport, Pudding Hill timber mill, Jackson's limeworks, Staveley. Refers to working for Arie Van Dyke and Lofty Chambers, and then becoming partners with Chambers in a potatoe farm. Says he set up own business in the 1960s. Recalls building a brick house in Methven when he married his first wife Jean in 1958 who died in 1972. Talks about remarriage to Alma Rowney. Says bought 84 acre triangle Cambrose Village and sold land for the Methven Motor Services building. Describes land improvements. Says he rented the Methven race course to grow potatoes and wheat on rotation. Refers to growing cocksfoot, white clover, barley, wheat, French oats and ran sheep. Description: Photographs taken circa 1880s by James Ring, photographer based in Greymouth. Scenes in Greymouth and nearby include views of severe flooding (p 3-5, 7); loading ships at the wharf showing hydraulic cranes raising hoppers of coal, and rolling stock laden with coal for transportation. Three shipping photographs including the SS Gerda wrecked on the Greymouth Breakwater in June 1888; the SS Mawhera ashore on North Beach, Greymouth in 1886, and the SS Rosamond crossing the Greymouth Bar. Beyond Greymouth views include the Grey River, Rocky Island, Brunnerton and the Brunnerton Bridge, and the West Coast Road. Then views of Lake Brunner, Refuge Island and Mitchell Falls. The Teremakau [now Taramakau] River is next, one view showing the road bridge, and one showing the flying fox (wire bridge) leading over to the Teremakau Hotel. These are followed by scenes along the Otira Gorge, including Warnock's Nob, Westley's Creek (Wesley Creek), and Starvation Point, before reaching Porter's Pass, Broken River, Arthur's Pass and the Devil's Punch Bowl Falls. The last sequence show Grasmere Station, Castle Hill Station (with one view of snow gates) and Craigieburn Station; the town of Cass; Bealey, Bealey Hotel, and Bealey Gorge, Lake Pearson and Lake Mapourika.
