This set includes Wellington street scenes and city views, circa 1900s; photographs taken at Trentham Military Camp circa 1914; New Zealand scenic and harbour views; miscellaneous photographs including three taken or collected in Australia, Germany, and the Pacific Islands; and portraits. Wellington scenes include: the unveiling ceremony for statue of John Ballance in Parliament grounds, April 1897; group portrait of armed militia outside Alexandra Barracks, Mount Cook; Queen Victoria statue in Post Office Square; men laying cable for electric trams in Courtenay Place ca 1905; interior of tram sheds; funeral procession for Mr Andrews, (who died of exposure while deer stalking near Martinborough) in Rugby Street 1904; intersection of Willis and Manners streets; a two-part panorama of Lambton Harbour and city buildings circa 1906; an elevated view of Lambton area; a view from Tinakori Hill across houses in Thorndon towards Wellington Harbour; two buildings on Customhouse Quay; ship HMS Powerful in Wellington Harbour in February 1906, showing the ship's company on the forward bow; schooner Rongo after capsizing in 1906. Miscellaneous images include: a table piled with floral tributes, probably in a church; a dining room strung with garlands; a church interior in the Pacific Islands; a postcard depicting Lombard's Bridge, Hamburg, Germany, and one of 'The Dog on the Tucker Box' pioneer's monument at Gundagai, New South Wales ca 1932. Also men wearing ceremonial regalia, possibly Masonic aprons, queuing in an unidentified street; three small girls outside Islay Cottage (location unidentified); a postcard of two small naked girls in a river, published by A G Steglitz in 1904; a crowd outside the assembly rooms at Mangaweka in 1905 awaiting the government land ballot. Frant Road is at the immediate foot of the hill in the foreground, Tinakori Road runs parallel to Grant Road, Hill Street runs off at an angle. Two other copies held at C-060-005 and C-060-005-a. This copy has fold-marks, repairs to tears lower right and lower left, and has been glued to a linen back. It includes MS notes in ink, lower left: 'Specimen to be submitted to the Hon.l Col. Treasurer so that he may say if he considers it of sufficient merit to come up to the expectations made by Mr Willis in his letter Jan 17 1885, as this is the arrangement on which payment was to be made - Mr Willis accepting the ? of ?ing of the cut manner. Description: Hydrographic map of Lambton Harbour, from Kaiwharawhara Point, south-eastwards to Oriental Bay, in the Wellington Harbour. Shows extensive soundings in fathoms, a pa (kainga) and the Waterloo Inn at Kaiwharawhara Point, southwards to 'Cliff' (Pipitea) Pa, military barracks, Thorndon settlement, Government House and offices, Custom House, a pa (kainga) on the coast at ?Te Aro Stream, Mount Cook military barracks, a large inlet (to present day Basin's Reserve) and a mill. Stamped 'Hydrographic Office 13 Jan 1954'. Written on map (before copying) 'L9267 Shelf Xz (Tracing same no. & shelf)'. Provides latitude and longitude of Pipitea Point, and tidal range. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
