Description: A view from below the summit of The Terrace, looking south down onto Te Aro and along the beach towards Mount Victoria and Oriental Bay. There are houses along the shoreline, a jetty, Manners Street runs parallel to the shore and there are houses dotted back over the flat land. There is low scrub in the foreground Appears to be a copy of the left side of of S C Brees' "Te Aro flat from near Captain Sharpe's residence" which shows Wellington in 1844 or 1845. (Panorama plate 66 in Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand, published London, 1847). Some details differ. The road in the left foreground is more marked, there are additional houses stretching back over the valley floor, and several buildings nearer the foreground are different from Brees' engraving, as are the details of the outline of Mount Victoria and the cliffs leading towards Oriental Bay. Several of these differences can also be observed in the wood engraving of the same view published in the Illustrated London News, 'Wellington, Te Aro flat' Sept 11 1847, p. 168, and in a related oil painting in the National Library of Australia. Both this watercolour and the oil painting may be copied from the Illustrated London news. The style of the watercolour is very like that of W. S. Hatton, who is known to have copied many views from the Illustrated London news, although his or her work was normally signed. Description: Family photographs of the William Hughes Field family, their home in Everton Terrace, Wellington, with views of Wellington and the harbour taken from various streets nearby. One group of images taken from Kelburn Park in February 1897 show the ship (with an escorting flotilla) in which Lord Glasgow was leaving New Zealand after his term as Governor of New Zealand. A few images show scenes in Christchurch. The yacht `Sunbeam' (privately owned by Lord Brassey) is shown in Wellington Harbour in a number of views. Several photographs shows areas on the outskirts of Wellington. Views fom Pukerua of the hills to the north and Kapiti Island; Otaihanga (with one of a Maori family at their home); Upper Hutt, showing Mr and Mrs Sarjeant's backyard, Mr and Mrs Barber's orchard, and two views of a farm owned by Mr [Martin?]; the coast at Island Bay, and fishermen and their huts at Island Bay. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides was probably taken earlier than those on some of the preceding sheets (information from his diary). This sheet contains images of Wellington, including Wellington Airport; views from Mount Victoria; around the Wellington coast including shore with marram grass and black-backed gulls; the Petone Settlers' Memorial; Marine Parade around Miramar, with the Monowai sailing through Wellington Heads; buildings in the city including Parliament Buildings, Government Buildings, Wakefield House at 90 The Terrace, used by the Founders Club; and an old two-storeyed wooden house on the Terrace; the Corinthic loading various goods at Wellington Wharves; Lambton Quay; Cable Car terminal and views of Wellington; and the Carter Observatory. Slides on this sheet are numbered 505-528, with a gap for no. 506. Arrangement: Image no. 506 (showing the view from Mount Victoria in Wellington) was taken as part of Williams' representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England.
