Description: Recent prints from old photographs of Wellington, originallty taken between about 1841 and 1929. Includes one photograph of a painting of Wellington waterfront from 1841, by Charles Heaphy. Only a few images identify the photographers, the Burton Brothers, Tyree Brothers and James Bragge. The Bragge photograph (looking down to the Harbour from Hill Street taken in the 1880s) was identified from his horse-drawn carriage with his name and occupation emblazoned on the side. Description: Albumen prints of Fijian people, a photograph of Dunedin taken by J R Morris, and newspaper cuttings about the SS Mataura were inserted in the front pocket of the album. (The albumen prints have now been placed in protective sleeves and are housed in an envelope outside the album) Album of photographs, albumen prints of popular art works, maps, hand-written and illuminated programmes, and one hand-written poem, created by William Fox Wheeler between 1864 and 1869, during which he was purser on board the SS Mataura. Most of the art-works and hand-written and illustrated items were done by William Fox Wheeler himself. Items of unusual interest are listed below. A map "shewing mail services performed by the Panama, New Zealand & Australian Royal Mail Company, and lines connecting with the company's vessels at Panama" (between p. 46-47). Interspersed with albumen prints of popular art works such as "The Angel Gabriel", "Mother & child", "The Last farewell of Marie Antoinette", and "Fascination" are scenes of places visited by the SS Mataura in the 1860s. Numbers of images show scenes in New Zealand, many of which are unidentified. Several are small portraits of Maori men and women. The album contains a page with early New Zealand, German, Australian and United States postage stamps. A photograph of a painting by Gustavus Von Tempsky showing "`Waiari' scene of conflict with the rebel Maoris on the 11th February 1864" is on page 27. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s (some dated 1868), and about 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from comparison with handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51) Early photographs of Wellington show a view down Boulcott Street, a view probably from Boulcott Street looking down over `Rhodes Bay' (now the reclaimed area beyond Willis Street), and looking towards the city from Thorndon. One view in the North Island shows the Kinross residence in Napier. Most of the photographs are of central North Island, with particular emphasis on the volcanic areas around Lake Taupo, Lake Rotomahana, the Waikato River (including the Huka Falls and Aniwhaniwha Falls), Tokaanu, Ohinemutu and the Pink Terraces. Several scenes show military outposts and redoubts, including two of Captain Gilbert Mair "and his men" (the Arawa Flying Column), at Kaiteriria Pa, Rotokakahi "just arrived after a raid after Te Kooti"; and one of the interior of the pa "with Captain Mair's contingent". In the South Island scenes include Lyttelton, Akaroa Harbour, the Otira River and Gorge, Bealey River, the summit of Arthurs Pass, the Porters Pass Hotel, Taramakau River, Gibson's Quay at Hokitika, one of several small churches at Hokitika, and Hereford Street (Christchurch).
