Description: Shows in foreground a circular island of garden with a grass border, in the centre of a circular driveway. A gardener kneels to tend plants at the left, and a dog sits keeping him company. At the right is an herbaceous border, in front of the partly obscured Wellington Terrace. Across the Terrace is a wooden house with finials, brick chimney, shingled roof, and a "To Let" sign in the window. Beyond this in the right background is Wellington Harbour and the flat area of Lower Hutt. In the centre background behind the circular garden, is the shingle roof, finial, brick chimney, and H-shaped metal chimney-pot of a neighbouring house, possibly that owned in 1878/79 (see Wise's Post Office Directory) by Joseph Nancarrow. Beyond is a pier projecting out from Lambton Quay, with Midland Point beyond. In the left background is the Boys' Grammar School (with spire) on Clifton Terrace and further north St Mary's Church, Hill Street; on the crest of the hill on the top left now the area occupied by the suburb of Wadestown, is Captain William Barnard Rhodes' house, "The Grange". Sometimes entitled: "A Wellington resident's house and garden, Flagstaff Hill, above Boulcott Street, looking North towards the Hutt Valley" or "Wellington from Flagstaff Hill". Previously thought to be a view from Mr Hays' residence. Sharp's residence was on the upper side of the Terrace, probably just north of the present join with Salamanca Road. According to notes compiled by B. M. Igglesden, grandson (TL 3/1/1, 1 August 1985), the gardens of the property extended from Mount Street to Everton Terrace, and when the estate was later cut up, 25 homes were built on the land, including Sir Robert Stout's home. See also notes at TL 3/1/1, 8 May 1985, or the Evening Post of 29 September 1928, for notes about the Sharp household (and other houses on the Terrace). Description: Shows flat land in the foreground, Wakefield's house with flagstaff in the middle distance, and rising up the hill (modern Bowen Street area) a church spire amid trees, referred to in an accompanying letter as being the proposed site for St Paul's, although in fact this was not the site of the first St Paul's (Museum Street further down the hill), built 1844. The harbour can be seen to the left, along with the far end of Lambton Quay, a few houses and tents on Te Aro Flat and the track that became The Terrace winding up the hill Enclosed in letter from Wicksteed to Robert Few, Church Society of New Zealand, 30 Jan 1841. '...A reference to the map of Wellington and to the sketch sent herewith, will convey a tolerably correct idea of the place which I have resolved to propose to the Committee. It is the triangular piece of land (not numbered, being a public reserve) lying immediately under number 500 on the map, and above numbers 470, 371 and 472. A road or street bounds it on the north west and separates it from another public reserve, designed for a cemetery [later Bolton Street Cemetery]. In the sketch, the principal house with the flagstaff near it, is Colonel Wakefield's, and the spot on which a church spire is placed is that to which I have drawn your attention. It is almost first seen on turning the corner, as I may call it, on entering Lambton Harbour. I regret that the sketch is so slight, but it is faithful' (Ref. MS Papers 256) Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Shows Australian squadron (Orlando, Calliope, Opal, Raven, Lizard & Rapid) in Wellington harbour, Jan. 1889 View includes The Terrace on the left, Te Aro Street in the foreground, Willis Street with St John's and St Peter's spires. The gasworks are also prominent on the shore, towards Oriental Bay on the right. The view is very similar to the central part of the work at D-032-002, and the scale of the drawing is very similar. Like D-032-002, "Wellington from Brooklyn", but unlike most other Aubrey works held by the Library, this work uses some gum arabic in the foreground. Description: A view of Wellington, looking up The Terrace, with gardens, fences and houses, two people walking up the road, the harbour on the left and Mt Cook and part of Mt Victoria in the background, along with a few houses on the Te Aro foreshore, possibly including Te Aro Pa. On the verso is an outline pencil sketch of the contours of the hills with the harbour from the same viewpoint. Attributed to White on stylistic grounds, especially the liberal use of red gouache. The watercolour is titled in the hand of T. B. Collinson, but is not drawn in his style. The next three sketches in this group of loose sketches are signed Fred. J. White. Description: View from Hill Street area looking south past the garden of Government House (now the site of the Beehive) on the far left, (with what is probably Alfred Domett's garden in the foreground), and towards the original St Paul's Church (Museum Street), along Lambton Quay (the shoreline) and The Terrace (marked as Constitution Hill here), with Te Aro, including the Pa and Mount Cook, with the military barracks in the distance. Stables are also indicated written on the roof of a building beyond the fence of Government House and above Lambton Quay. Description: Looking south along Lambton Quay and up The Terrace (the track up the hill) from its lower end. Various features are numbered: 1. Flagstaff 2 or 3 miles off (on top of Mount Albert); 2. the barracks (on top of Mount Cook) 3.Clay Point (corner of Lambton Quay and Willis Streets with Plimmer's Ark moored at its base); 4. Captain Sharp's house on the top of Wellington Terrace; 5. The Terrace; 6. Dr T. S. Ralph's house on The Terrace, [no numbers 7 or 8 on Pearse's list, but two empty sections in the foreground are marked 7 & 8]; 9. Noah's [Plimmer's] Ark, 10. Barrett's Hotel (towards the end of Lambton Quay at the foot of the cliff in the middle distance); [no number 11 but Pearse has duplicated number 12 on the flanks of Mount Victoria to the left]; 12. Spot on Wellington Terrace behind J. P.'s office on the Beach - a difficult and dangerous clamber or crawl when a quiet retired cut to the works taken; 13. Front of Deighton's house on The Terrace where J. P. first lodged (a point on the right of The Terrace, part-way up); 14. Where the Kumutoto Bridge has been built. The project emanated from J.P. - roadway continued from Terrace (a flat spot above the small gorge formed by the Kumutoto Stream, modern Woodward Street) Likely to have been drawn after January 1855 because the companion view on the same page, E-455-f-032-1, mentions 'the late Baron Alzdorf'. Alzdorf died in January 1855 during the Wellington earthquake. The drawing of Dr T S Ralph's house also indicates a date of 1855. Ralph was resident on The Terrace in 1855 according to electoral rolls, but had moved elsewhere by 1856. Pearse returned to England in 1856 Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
