Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1901 and 1903. South Island subjects include the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and quarry, Westport railway yards and wharf, Reefton, and scenes of explosions in Lyttelton Harbour for Regatta Day, 1st January 1909, and a large number of people beside the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade building. Scenes show the laying of foundation stones for the Petone Waterworks, and for the Baptist Church in Petone, both in 1903. There is also a view of the lecturn for St Augustine's Church in Petone, which was made by the Petone Railway Workshops. Several photographs show the Kelburn Cable Car, the cable car tunnel and the engine room, in 1903. Two photographs of a group of school children, the girls wearing white pinafores over dark coloured dresses. Some photographs relate to New Zealand railways, including specific locomotives, the Rimutaka Incline with the middle rail (part of the Fell System), railway tunnels, bush railways and railway workshops and yards; and some relate to Godber's interest and work in fire fighting. Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: Photographs taken by John Dobree Pascoe and others, chiefly in the Rakaia River area. Views include groups of mountaineers; routes traversed in the mountains; the building of mountain huts; deer stalking; the difficulties of fording flooded rivers; traversing glaciers; camping in the mountains; and life enjoyed by mountaineers. Particular sequences include views of the source of the Rakaia River at the terminal face of the Ramsay Glacier; the first ascent of jacob Glacier and the second ascent of Mount Butler by ian Powell and Jim Nichols; the first ascent and traverse of Mount Whitcombe by Boney Chester, Allan Willis and Bill Mirams (28/12/1931); the first ascent of the Snow Dome by Jack Hayes, Cedric Turner and A Anderson; record of pioneer work in the Wanganui-Rangitata-Rakaia watershed by Dr E Teichelmann with guides A Graham and J Clark (in 1911); and the first traverse of Malcolm Peak by Jack Hayes and Cedric Turner in February 1934. Description: Album includes scenic photographs of areas in the region of the Southern Alps, including panoramas and closer views of mountains, valleys, rivers and glaciers. Many photographs show groups of men and women, many of whom are identified, camping and climbing in the Southern Alps area. Also shown are scenes of The Hermitage at Mount Cook (one of which shows a bullock team for transporting stores, and another which shows Frayne's coach leaving Mount Cook); views of the Birch Hill Station; and Ball Hut (with a curtained-off area as a "ladies' compartment"). Top centre right: 'A Korari hoe on a razeed taia' (a Maori hoe). Top right: 'Camp at Otaitai' showing a camp site near the foot of a cliff; Bottom left 'Damn specimens. There's grub. M.Malmanche ascending ye wata & finds three wooden turnips' shows Mr Malmanche gesturing indignantly in favour of cooking turnips, rather than keeping them as specimens. Behind Malmanche is a seated Maori man with Malmanche again at the top of a ladder, raiding a whata, or food storage platform. There is a large whare alongside. Bottom right: Valley of the Waitaki Tuesday Oct 25, an extensive view of a valley and hills with a small fenced enclosure to the left, possibly a grave site.
