Description: Photographs of a military parade on Lambton Quay as part of the visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York consisting of teams of eight horses pulling small carriages on their way to the Battery with spectators lining the street; No.3 Gun Detachment at a military tournament in November 1891 at Hutt Race Course standing with their gun the participants being Sgt Carter, Br Daniels, Gunners Brown, Petrie, Curtis, Bott, Renwick, Raynor, and Quilice(?); No.1 (Gun Detachment?) with their gun, standing next to a tent in Miramar in 1898 the participants being Gibson, Coombes, Coleman, Pettiecuck(?), Lyon, Boyes, Fraser, Feeney, Hill, Brown, Spence, Courtney, and Truman; and a large group of men possibly of D battery of Wellington militia holding poles with paddles at the end with circles painted on them (markers). Description: Views, chiefly unidentified, of a trip in the South Island in January 1896, photographed by Algernon Charles Gifford. Most of the photographs are landscape views of lakes and mountains in the Wakatipu area, but there are a number showing a group of six unidentified people in the garden of a single-storeyed house with verandahs, at Paradise. In another scene a man and woman, two of the previous group, are shown in a field with the man wearing riding clothes, seated on a white horse, and the woman standing by the horse's head with a dog beside her. Also one photograph shows three young girls, Bessie and Daisy Fergus, and Agnes Mill, also at Paradise. A large two-storeyed house with verandahs upstairs and downstairs is seen in one image. An envelope attached inside the back cover, contains 14 loose photographs of similar views. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken in the South Island, except for one view of `Woodcroft', the home of Dr John Kinder in Arney Road, Remuera from about 1880 until his death in 1903. Many of the South Island views are related to early surveyors William Duncan Ross McCurdie and his wife Olga McCurdie, and Ernest Herbert Wilmot, who were surveying land near Tahakopa, Tautuku, McLennan Valley and the Catlins. Several show the homes of early settlers in the Tahakopa Valley. Of particular interest are a view of women voting at their first election at Tahakopa (28.11.1893); one of an early settler's first home at Tahakopa; the first boat sailing up to Mr McCurdie's camp; and a group of horsemen on a beach, parading before going to war (1914).
